• Evolving the core systems that power editing, navigation, and large codebases • Improving Zed’s real-time collaboration infrastructure built on CRDTs • Designing editor data structures and indexes that update incrementally as code changes • Designing data structures and memory layouts that keep editor operations fast under large projects and continuous edits • Identifying and eliminating performance regressions across rendering, input handling, and editor state • Extending Zed across macOS, Linux, and Windows • Engineers regularly measure, profile, and improve the editor while maintaining strong testing discipline.
• Designers at Zed work closely with engineers, prototype ideas directly in the product, and often implement parts of the interface themselves. • Collaborative programming workflows • Interaction models for AI agents that read and modify code • Navigating and understanding large codebases • Keyboard-driven workflows and command systems • Interfaces for Git, debugging, and code exploration • Zed’s design system and interaction patterns • Prototyping and implementing UI in the product
• Work on fixing community issues and bugs • Prioritize and implement features requested by the community • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code • Review and discuss pull requests, giving and receiving constructive feedback • Participate in code reviews and collaborate with teammates and community members in real time • Help improve our GitHub processes and tooling • Optimize performance and user experience where necessary
