Software Development Engineer in Test

Role Description The Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated test solutions and frameworks that support the quality and reliability of SmartRent products. This role builds and enhances scalable automation frameworks and integrates automated testing into CI pipelines to support continuous quality validation across platform and device functionality. The SDET works closely with developers and QA team members to: - Embed automation into the development lifecycle - Design and execute test strategies across functional, integration, API, and end-to-end testing - Perform code reviews to ensure automation quality and consistency This role also focuses on continuously improving testing processes and methodologies, evaluating and incorporating AI tools to shift automation earlier in the development process, and independently determining effective technical approaches to testing solutions. The SDET contributes to refining existing procedures and developing forward-looking testing models that support reliable, scalable product delivery. Qualifications - 3+ years of experience in test automation development using JavaScript or TypeScript, including hands-on experience with Playwright. - 3+ years of experience working with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, CircleCI) and version control systems (e.g., GitHub). - Experience with AI tools such as Claude Code and Cursor. - Solid understanding of QA tool development chains and environments. - Demonstrate expertise in black box and grey box testing methodologies, experience with standard QA and development tools, and the ability to operate within short release cycles. - Superior communication and analytical skills, including strong ability to identify and solve ambiguous problems. - Experience with Mobile automation with Appium. - Experience with project and test management tools (e.g. Jira/Zephyr). Role Description As a National Sales Director at SmartRent, you will be responsible for driving revenue growth through the sale of our industry leading hardware and software solutions; adding new units and expanding ARR of enterprise level clients within your territory. You will cultivate and grow relationships with our existing clients for expansion opportunities. You will also be responsible for prospecting new business and acquiring new logos; having a consultative approach while running a complex deal cycle with multiple stakeholders. Qualifications - 4+ years of experience as an enterprise B2B SaaS sales professional (hunter and farmer). - Proven ability to close complex SaaS or Hardware contracts in excess of $100K. - Experience running a complex deal cycle with multiple stakeholders (multi-threading) often where decisions are made by committee. - Ability to develop C-Suite / Executive / VP level relationships quickly and effectively. - Experience presenting to and negotiating with C-Suite / Executive / VP level stakeholders at leading enterprise companies. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills. - Problem-solving skills with a collaborative mindset. - Organized, process-oriented, and someone who values the importance of having proper documentation. - Team player and self-starter that can pivot with change easily and thrive in a fast-paced environment. - An ALL-IN mentality, ready to hit the ground running, have some fun and crush your goals as a team and individual contributor. - Must be willing and able to travel out of state for industry events and client meetings as needed. Job Description The Embedded Software Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining firmware for SmartRent devices, including Z-Wave controllers (hubs) and access control systems. This role supports the integration of hardware devices with SmartRent platform services, enabling reliable communication between field devices and cloud-based systems. This role contributes to firmware development using the Nerves framework and Elixir-based systems and collaborates with hardware, platform, and application teams to implement new functionality, support device reliability, and maintain existing device software. Responsibilities - Lead medium- to large-scale development efforts across the embedded stack, from firmware through device interfaces, operating with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating with cross-functional teams. - Design, develop, and maintain firmware for SmartRent IoT devices using Elixir and the Nerves framework. - Lead the bring-up of new hardware platforms, including driver development, peripheral integration, and system validation. - Develop and maintain device-local user interfaces running on embedded hardware using technologies such as Phoenix, Flutter, and gRPC. - Integrate third-party systems, including HVAC, access control, and Z-Wave platforms, by interpreting vendor documentation and supporting required communication protocols. - Develop and maintain automated tests and supporting documentation to ensure system reliability and prevent regressions across deployed devices. - Develop project timelines, manage deliverables against defined milestones, and communicate risks, dependencies, and requirement changes proactively. - Support team development through code reviews, technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and mentorship of less experienced engineers. - Contribute to internal tooling, shared engineering resources, and open-source initiatives aligned with SmartRent’s technical ecosystem. Required Qualifications - Minimum of 4 years of hands-on software development experience. - Proficiency in Elixir or Erlang/OTP, with working knowledge of the BEAM runtime, or demonstrated ability to learn and apply functional programming concepts. - Experience with, or demonstrated interest in, embedded Linux systems development. - Working knowledge of Linux internals, including device trees, kernel configuration, system boot processes, and shell tooling. - Demonstrated ability to deliver projects from design through deployment with minimal supervision. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams. - Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new tools, languages, and technologies as required. - Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship now or in the future.
