Role Description Shimmick is seeking a Lead Estimator to be based in Suisun City, CA, Irvine, CA, Denver, CO, Seattle, WA, or remotely. This role is responsible for compiling, reviewing, analyzing, and quoting project materials, labor, equipment, data, environmental factors, and overall costs. Additionally, you will prepare technical evaluations, cost estimating draft reports, memos, and letters, and present recommendations to management. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: - Prepares technical evaluations, cost estimating draft reports, memos, and letters, and presents recommendations to management. - Develops, provides, and communicates cost estimates for all assigned projects. - Accurately and thoroughly forecasts costs of future projects as well as changes to existing projects while also developing timely estimates for each design deliverable at each phase of design development. - Reviews and interprets project drawings, specifications, contracts, and owner-provided documents. - Develops detailed material take-offs for estimate development and procurement. - Expected to assist in the preparation of larger and more complex estimating assignments including overall estimating strategy. - Understands construction means, methods, and sequencing. - Understands how various constraints may impact the estimate and prepares detailed scope-specific estimates. - Analyzes and incorporates historical data into production factors. - Prepares and/or coordinates preparation of estimates. - Provides mentoring, coaching, and training within the estimating department. - Prepares scope and bid package breakdowns for trade partners. - Ability to oversee multiple scopes within the estimate development and leverages past experience to craft estimating strategy. - Ability to travel for client meetings, bid kickoffs, bid reviews, bid closeouts, interviews, or team workshops as needed. Qualifications - Bachelor’s Degree + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. - Experience in hard-bid contract work as well as conceptual estimating. - Understands construction means, methods, and sequences. - Experience with water, wastewater, transit, and/or transportation construction projects. Requirements - Excellent project management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands in a deadline-driven environment. - Previous heavy civil construction experience. - Proficiency in estimating software (HCSS Heavy Bid or Ineight Estimate). - Strong problem-solving skills and consistent attention to detail. - Work independently and effectively to prioritize multiple tasks. - Highly organized with excellent time management skills. - Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills. - Proficient computer skills and Microsoft Office suite of applications. This challenging position will provide excellent growth opportunity while supporting complex civil infrastructure projects across Shimmick's expanding footprint. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: - Works with the Company estimating systems and processes. - Applies estimating terminology, measures, concepts and principles. - Recognizes how various processes/project actions and assumptions may impact the project estimates and begin to assist in quantifying the impact. - Technical estimating skills. - Prepares bid packages, conceptual estimates and analysis of subcontractor bids, etc. for projects. - Performs duties with some complexity under general supervision. - Expected to assist in the preparation of larger and more complex estimating assignments including the Estimate Plan. - Understands Division costing structure (overheads, G&A, insurance, etc). - Develops wage rate build-ups. - Reads and interprets drawings and specifications. - Develops detailed material take-offs for estimate development and field procurement of bulk materials. Qualifications - Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. - Experience estimating heavy civil, heavy industrial, or complex commercial construction projects. Requirements - Experience in Rail, Transit, and/or Water/Wastewater infrastructure projects. - Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite. - Strong problem-solving skills and consistent attention to detail. - Ability to manage changing deadlines and work well under pressure for multiple team leaders. - Work independently and effectively to prioritize multiple tasks. - Highly organized with excellent time management skills. - Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills. - Ability to travel for bid meetings and related activities. The salary range for this position is between $110,000- $150,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
