About the Role: Settle is hiring a Financial Systems Director to own the architecture and integrity of our financial data infrastructure. This is a senior individual contributor role sitting at the intersection of accounting, data engineering, and financial operations. You will be responsible for executing our month-end close automation, governing how it scales, and ensuring it holds up to audit scrutiny. You will serve as the primary owner of Settle's financial systems stack, including our CECL model, reconciliation infrastructure, and close automation tooling. You'll work directly with the Controller, Capital Markets, and Engineering to ensure that complex financial data flows are accurate, well-controlled, and defensible. This role requires someone who brings both deep accounting judgment and strong technical execution; someone who can independently evaluate a data model, identify a control gap, and write the memo to document the fix. What You’ll Do: Financial Systems Ownership - Own the design, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Settle's financial data infrastructure, including reconciliation pipelines, close automation, and reporting systems. - Serve as the primary technical owner of the CECL model and loan accounting data flows, partnering with Capital Markets and the Controller on methodology and reserve calculations. - Develop and govern the company's data schemas and accounting data tables, ensuring they support accurate, audit-ready financial reporting. - Lead evaluation and implementation of third-party tools and internal system builds that improve close efficiency and data accuracy. - Assist in the delivery of high-quality management reporting packages. Close & Reconciliation - Own the execution of automated reconciliations across bank transaction data, payment processors, internal databases, and accounting software. - Support the monthly and annual close process, including journal entries, flux analysis, and supporting schedules for revenue recognition, loan accounting, and intercompany activity. - Drive resolution of exceptions and systemic data issues — not just flagging problems, but building scalable solutions to prevent recurrence. Controls, Documentation & Audit Readiness - Develop and maintain comprehensive process documentation for all reconciliation and reporting workflows. - Partner with the Controller to ensure financial systems controls are well-designed, consistently applied, and audit-ready. - Serve as the primary systems counterpart to external auditors, preparing data and documentation across technical areas. Cross-Functional Partnership - Collaborate with Engineering, Data, and Capital Markets to translate business requirements into reliable financial infrastructure. - Influence upstream data and product decisions to ensure accounting implications are identified and addressed early. - Operate with a high degree of independence. You own this function and are expected to exercise judgment, raise risks, and drive solutions. Who You'll Need: - 7+ years of experience in accounting operations, financial systems, or data-intensive accounting roles. - Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, particularly revenue recognition (ASC 606), loan accounting (ASC 310), CECL methodology, and multi-entity structures. - Experience at a Big 4 or large regional accounting firm. - Advanced SQL proficiency; ability to independently build, maintain, and audit complex queries against large datasets. - Direct experience owning reconciliation infrastructure or close automation at a fintech, lending, or financial services company. - Familiarity with NetSuite, QuickBooks; experience with AI-native ERPs is a bonus. - Demonstrated ability to produce clear, well-structured documentation including process docs, control narratives, or technical memos that hold up under audit review. - CPA required (active or inactive license accepted); Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, or related field. - Strong “get things done” mindset. Highly autonomous, proactive, and a relentless problem solver who takes ownership and moves fast in a lean startup environment. - Collaborative builder who can zoom in and out, balancing big-picture thinking with attention to detail. Not afraid to get hands-on first to understand the problem. Prioritizes well, experiments, prototypes, and asks questions when needed. - Naturally curious with a love of learning. Doesn’t need to know everything upfront but knows where to find what’s needed. Enjoys working across accounting, systems, and operations. - Tech-forward and solutions-oriented. Understands the benefits and limitations of AI and other modern tools, with a focus on automating, streamlining, and building scalable processes. - High degree of ownership and independent judgment. Compensation: This role has an annual starting salary range of $200,000 - $220,000 + equity + benefits. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to your individual skills and experience.
