Consultant28 days ago

Role Description Prevail Fund is exploring a new area of giving, and this consultancy will help determine whether the evidence supports launching a new fund. We are looking for a Senior Research and Evidence Consultant to join us for roughly three months to review promising livelihoods interventions and the organizations delivering them. This is a rare opportunity to shape a major strategic decision for a potential new fund. You’ll work closely with the research team to help build the evidence base and analysis behind Prevail’s scoping work, forming judgments on what works, what does not, and which interventions have the highest probability of success. The core components of this role are to: - Help frame the comparison. - Work with the team to define the impact metric for comparing interventions on a like-for-like basis, and to build the evidence-levels framework for assessing how much weight each finding should carry. - Review the evidence. - For each of the ~20 organizations, review academic studies, evaluations, public materials, and third-party sources. Capture the headline findings, including cost per unit, impact size, and persistence, and assess how much confidence we should place in each study and why. - Explain what works and why. - For each intervention type, synthesize the evidence to identify how and why the model works, where it breaks down, and what this implies for Prevail’s decision on whether to launch a fund. Assess the strength of the evidence against the evidence-levels framework, and form a judgment on whether the overall evidence base and implementation landscape are sufficient to justify moving forward. - Manage the cost-effectiveness model. - Incorporate insights from the research into the cost-effectiveness model. Update the model as new evidence shifts assumptions or conclusions for a given intervention or organization. - Help draft the decision memo. - Contribute to the memo that will inform Prevail’s decision on whether to launch the fund. Work with the team to translate the evidence, cost-effectiveness analysis, and implementation landscape into a clear recommendation. Qualifications - 6+ years in research, evaluation, philanthropy, or consulting, including evidence reviews or cost-effectiveness analyses that informed real funding or policy decisions. - An experienced researcher who can review and synthesize academic and field evidence in low- and middle-income contexts, judge study quality quickly, and draw out what matters for a decision. - Self-directed, fast, honest about uncertainty, and comfortable with the ambiguity of early-stage scoping. - Familiarity with cost-effectiveness analysis (BOTEC or CEA) or GiveWell-style approaches. The ability to build or pressure-test models is not required, but it is a strong plus. - Familiarity with livelihoods, economic empowerment, or poverty programming is a plus. Requirements - We expect this to be a short-term consultancy over roughly three months. The engagement could be full-time or part-time, depending on the right person’s availability and fit. - Start date: As soon as possible. - Contract duration: Around three months. - Time requirement: Full-time preferred, with part-time arrangements considered for the right candidate. - Reports to: Claudia Carbajal, Senior Researcher. - Compensation: Competitive day rate, commensurate with experience. - Location: Remote, with candidates ideally based within 2/+4 hours of Central Africa Time. - Travel: Up to 20% of the time, concentrated around the field-visit period, and negotiable. Any required travel expenses will be covered by Prevail Fund. Application process Our hiring process is thorough, because there are very specific skills required for this role. Successful candidates will go through: - Initial call with hiring manager (~30 minutes) - Work exercise (3 hrs) - Final panel interview (~60 minutes) To apply: If you’re excited to help us scale, please apply using the application form. We are taking applications on a rolling basis and will respond to all applications within three weeks. *Note: If you currently work for one of Prevail’s partner organizations, we’d love to consider you for this role as long as you can provide their express permission. If this applies to you, please ask them to confirm this with us. Thank you!

Role Description Prevail Fund is exploring a new area of giving, and this consultancy will help assess whether there is a strong enough implementer landscape to support it. We are looking for a Senior Implementation and Field Consultant to join us for roughly three months to assess promising livelihoods interventions and the organizations delivering them. The consultant will assess delivery models, operational capacity, and the practical risks of scaling. This is a rare opportunity to shape a major strategic decision for a potential new fund. You’ll work closely with Claudia, Varsha, and the research team to support the calls, field visits, and operational assessments behind Prevail’s scoping work. You will help determine whether organizations in this sector have the operational strength, leadership, growth potential, and delivery model needed to absorb funding and deliver impact as part of a potential fund. The core components of this role are to: - Pressure-test implementers. - Co-lead screening calls with senior leaders of livelihoods organizations to assess whether their delivery model is credible, aligned with the evidence, and capable of absorbing funding and delivering impact. - Ensure efficient, effective field visits through thorough preparation and tools. - Write the operational read-ups for each organization, covering budget, scale, growth trajectory, geographic footprint, MEL maturity, government relationships, leadership strength, absorptive capacity, and key risks or flags. - Set up the sector conversations by identifying implementers, funders, and field experts. - Get in the field by joining visits to implementing organizations, walking through their operations, and comparing delivery models. - Help sketch the fund by contributing to the first cut of the fund design: allocations, deployment pace, grant sizes, and the team needed to run it. - Contribute to the recommendation by drafting the implementation sections of the decision memo. Qualifications - 8-15+ years working with NGOs, philanthropy, or implementing organizations in low- and middle-income countries, in program management, field operations, or implementation. - Experience working with on-the-ground NGO teams in low- and middle-income countries, ideally in Sub-Saharan Africa and/or South Asia. - Strong relationship management skills, building rapport quickly with NGO leaders and staff. - Strong logistics and organization skills for planning and running multi-country field visits end-to-end. - Sound judgment and independence, translating site visits into clear operational reads. Requirements - Experience running programs or organizations in low- and middle-income countries. - Ability to assess how an organization actually works beyond its own account of itself. - Comfort leading multi-country fieldwork from planning through execution. Benefits - Flexible working arrangements. - Competitive day rate, commensurate with experience. - Remote work with candidates ideally based within 2/+4 hours of Central Africa Time. - Travel expenses covered by Prevail Fund. Company Description Prevail is a new foundation dedicated to pursuing bold goals. Role Description Prevail Fund is looking for a leader to build and lead our Research team as we scale. Research is core to what Prevail does - it drives how we assess new philanthropic opportunities, strengthen our existing Education Fund, and make decisions as we launch new funds over the coming years. We're looking for someone who can lead and develop this team to ensure we have world-class research capacity as Prevail scales. If you're a research leader who enjoys building high-performing teams, loves diving into new sectors, and wants to use those skills to mobilize significant philanthropic capital towards some of the world's most important problems - we'd love to hear from you. Working closely with David and Andrew, you'll lead Prevail's Research function - setting the vision and direction for the team, while remaining hands-on in the work itself. You'll work with a team of researchers conducting high-quality, actionable research that spans our Education Fund, our New Initiatives pipeline, and future funds as Prevail grows. This is not an academic role, nor a pure people-management role; you will both develop a strong research team and drive analytical work yourself, producing practical recommendations that Prevail can launch as ambitious, well-funded programs. - Set the vision and strategy for Prevail's Research function. - Lead and develop the Research team. - Drive Prevail's strategy for assessing new philanthropic opportunities. - Build and own complex quantitative and qualitative models. - Identify, diligence, and evaluate high-impact interventions. - Synthesize and translate evidence into crisp, transparent outputs. - Answer operational and programmatic questions when evaluating new opportunities. Qualifications - 9+ years experience in conducting research to drive decision-making. - 4+ years leading, mentoring, and managing other researchers. - Experience with implementing organizations in global development is a strong asset, but not required. - Ability to conduct goal-oriented research and structure the most efficient analytical path. - Clear tracking and outlining of key conclusions throughout the research process. - Integration of quantitative and qualitative data from diverse fields. - Creative communication skills to develop outputs that motivate diverse audiences. Requirements - Research experience. - Leadership experience. - Action orientation. - Transparent thinking. - Synthesis skills. Benefits - Full time, permanent contract. - Drive real impact by mobilizing philanthropic capital that will impact millions of lives. - Flexibility to work remotely from anywhere in a timezone between -6 UTC (US Central Time) and +3 UTC (EAT). - Competitive salary based on experience, skills, and location. - Meaningful benefits including health insurance and wellness benefits. - Growth opportunities with strong manager support and targeted feedback. - Flexible leave policy, including 25 days PTO, plus public holidays. Company Description Prevail is a new foundation dedicated to catalyzing large-scale social change by supporting private philanthropists and field implementers to pursue more ambitious and impactful goals. We work with private philanthropists to fund specific initiatives for 10-12 years. Rather than diversifying across multiple causes, we prioritize goal-driven investments in proven solutions with the potential to reshape global norms. - Our first fund aims to improve foundational education for over 27.5 million children across 11 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. - Prevail provides patient capital to implementers, primarily in the form of grants that grow over time as our partner organizations scale. - In our first three years, we've made significant progress against our ambitious fundraising targets. - Partnered with 30+ organizations across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. - Hired 35+ mission-driven team members globally. - Run dozens of execution projects to strengthen key functions for our partners.
