Role Description The Director of Global Policy & Research leads OpenMined's work at the intersection of frontier AI, data governance, and the public interest. You will own three things: - Research direction: Set OpenMined's research agenda on the most consequential questions in frontier AI, particularly data availability, access, and governance, and ensure our work shapes how policymakers, civil society, and industry think about them. - Policy positions: Develop and communicate substantive policy proposals on data access, privacy-preserving AI, and adjacent issues, ensuring AI systems and their interactions with data are transparent, competitive, and rights-respecting. - Engineering alignment: Work closely with OpenMined's engineering leadership to identify where our protocols can be deployed in the public interest, and ensure the data networks we build and support are operated for public benefit. This is a management role where you will lead a team, build OpenMined's external profile in policy circles, and contribute to organizational strategy. Qualifications - Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience leading policy and/or research work at the intersection of AI, data governance, and public interest, ideally at a frontier AI lab governance team, an AI-focused think tank, a regulator, or comparable organization. - Minimum 2 years of experience managing a small team. - Track record of publishing thought-leading work that has shaped policy debates or public understanding. - Existing professional relationships with policymakers, civil society, or standards bodies, and the credibility to build them in others. - Strong technical literacy; comfortable engaging directly with engineering teams on cryptography, machine learning, and PETs, and translating that substance for policy audiences. - Excellent written communication. - Comfort operating in a startup environment with ambiguity and broad scope. - Comfort traveling to the US and other policy hubs on average once a month. Role Description We're looking for a QA Lead to join OpenMined, a nonprofit on a mission to build the public network for the world's non-public data — unlocking 1,000,000x more information across every scientific field and industry, and ensuring it stays open, equitable, and accessible to all. Our engineering team is brilliant and mission-driven, and we are looking for someone to join it who can collaborate across teams to build our quality function from the ground up. Our products are gaining customer traction and we strive to ensure reliability, security, and data integrity. This is not a traditional QA role. You won't sit in a separate team writing test scripts against specs. You'll be embedded with engineers — pairing on test design, reviewing architecture for testability, building frameworks and tooling, and creating the habits that make quality a natural part of how every engineer works. You'll set the organizational quality strategy: what gets tested, how deeply, at what layer, and what constitutes "done." The right person for this role is an engineer who chose to specialize in quality — someone who can read a codebase, identify the riskiest surfaces, design a testing strategy, write the tests, build the framework, and teach others to do the same. You earn credibility by contributing code and finding real bugs, not by writing policies and expecting compliance. Today, the entire AI stack is built on copying content into model weights and hoping the lawsuits don't land. We think there's a better architecture: data stays at the source, AI queries it live, and every answer carries attribution back to who made it possible. - Syft Space is the local node any data owner (a newsroom, a publisher, a research lab, an individual) runs to publish their content under their own terms and pricing. - Syft Hub is the network layer that lets AI labs, agents, and app developers find those nodes and query across them in real time. This is a team lead + hands-on technical leadership role. You write code. You make architecture decisions. You set engineering standards by example. You're the most experienced engineer on the squad, the person others look to for production-quality judgment, and the voice that connects this team's decisions with the organization's broader platform strategy.
