Title: Group Leader Location: Brooklyn United States Job Description: About Us: New York Edge is a non-profit organization and one of the largest providers of school-based afterschool programs in New York City and the metropolitan region, serving over 25,000 elementary, middle, and high school students each year. The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underinvested communities by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for success in life. Summary: New York Edge is seeking passionate and enthusiastic people to fill the seasonal/temporary part-time Summer Day Group Leader position. In this role, you will be critical to the successful operation of New York Edges summer camp program. You will be responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for school-age children to provide opportunities for learning, interaction, and academic/personal growth. Summer Day Group Leaders also participate in activities and trips while providing and maintaining a safe working environment. They help with homework and prepare students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in Sports and Arts. Schedule: Part-Time Seasonal/Temporary (July 2nd - August 16th) Weekly Scheduled Hours of 16-29 (depends on operational needs of camp location) No Summer Camp on July 4 Elementary school: operates Monday- Friday 8 am - 2 pm and 12 pm - 6 pm During the last week of August 12th-16th, the summer camp will operate from 8 am-6 pm Middle school: operates Monday-Thursday only from 12 pm - 4 pm (Camp is closed on Fridays) Locations: We have Summer Day Camp locations across the five boroughs! Remote: No, this role requires you to be in-person. Pay: $17/hour ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: - Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants in the program by providing appropriate supervision at all times. - Keep the immediate supervisor informed daily of any concerns regarding participants, staff, or the facility. - Prepare the learning environment and necessary supplies for program activities. Assume responsibility for the cleanliness and organization of the camp room, program supplies, and activity space. - Support the planning and implementation of all activities, including but not limited to learning initiatives, field trips, and culminating performances. - Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences. - Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication about their childs strengths and areas of growth. Take a leadership role in providing regular updates to caregivers. Qualities were looking for: - Demonstrated ability to assist with activities for kids and teens - Must have excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills - Possess a desire to work directly with children - Ability to multitask and manage workflow in a fast-paced environment - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff, school personnel, parents - Sensitive to social-emotional needs and characteristics of students - Ability to follow directions and adhere to all policies/procedures - Flexibility, reliability, and sound judgment - Other duties as assigned - Must be available to complete and attend trainings before the start of the camp season - Must be available to work throughout the entirety of the camp season, July 2nd - August 16th REQUIREMENTS: - High School Diploma or equivalent - Must be 18 years old - College credits and/or degrees are highly preferred - Physical requirements include the ability to climb stairs, lift children, and monitor events. - Experience working with children strongly preferred - Summer Day Group Leaders will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration. - At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health. Each year, programs in academics--including STEM, the arts, sports & wellness, and college access help 40,000 students develop leadership skills and succeed in school. Summary: The work of the Success Mentor requires a long-term commitment to providing support to students in elementary and/or middle school. An effective mentor establishes and upholds a relationship with the child and family over a period of at least twelve months or longer, if possible, supporting their social-emotional development. Children generally live in uniformity and habit. The longer someone spends time with them, the higher probability that the children will be successful. Kids who have good relationships with their mentors have higher chances of attaining academic success. All applicants must be able to function as a part of a team inclusive of a Blended Learning Math Instructor, a Blended Learning ELA and Writing Instructor/Mentor and a Student/Family Mentor. Schedule: Part-Time Monday – Friday (Some evenings and weekends required) This role requires you to be in-person. Pay: $20-$25/hr Salary is commensurate with experience, skills, education, and merit. Essential Job Functions: - Parental communication and support regarding student progress and potential opportunities. - Provide support and intervention as needed to help each child remain on track for success. - Create and advance a personal and optimistic relationship with a child. - Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing personal objectives. - Interact with students throughout the after-school period to observe and support positive growth. - Provide timely feedback to students and their parents to keep them engaged in the child’s positive social-emotional development. - Communicate with students, parents and school leadership on any concerns that may develop. - Provide ongoing mentoring in a supportive after-school environment. - Work hours will be consistent Monday through Friday with potential for some weekend or evening scheduled activities or events. Required Skills: - Minimum of 3 years experience, or comparable, with elementary school students supporting their social-emotional well-being. - Excellent communication skills. - Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds. - Experience communicating and supporting families using workshops, family interaction and intervention skills. - Understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it contributes to self-paced online learning. - Must be capable of accessing and transmitting information using a computer. - May be required to walk up and down stairs. - May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed. - Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events. Qualifications: - High School Diploma required - Bachelor’s Degree preferred with a concentration in Child Psychology or Social Work - Minimum 3 years student support experience. - Experience working with a diverse student population is helpful.
