Role Description The Senior Manager of Communications is GirlTREK's communications strategist, responsible for shaping how the organization tells its story to members, donors, partners, and the public. This role develops messaging and positioning, manages media relations, writes compelling copy across channels, and ensures all communications reflect GirlTREK's voice and values. The Sr. Manager provides strategic communications support to marketing campaigns, partnerships, and programs. Key Responsibilities - Communications Strategy & Messaging (30%) - Develop messaging and positioning for GirlTREK across all audiences (members, donors, partners, public) - Create content strategy - what to communicate, when, through which channels, and why - Steward GirlTREK's brand voice, tone, and storytelling approach - Ensure all communications reflect GirlTREK's values and cultural authenticity - Coordinate communications across divisions to ensure consistent narrative - Develop and maintain brand voice guidelines - Create messaging frameworks for programs, campaigns, and partnerships - Ensure consistency in how GirlTREK is represented across all communications - Adapt organizational messaging for different audiences while maintaining brand integrity - Media Relations & Public Relations (30%) - Develop PR strategy and media outreach plans to increase GirlTREK's visibility and public profile - Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets - Identify media opportunities and story angles that advance organizational priorities - Pitch stories and secure media placements in target outlets - Write and distribute press releases and media advisories - Respond to media inquiries in a timely and strategic manner - Coordinate interviews and media appearances for leadership - Prepare leadership for media appearances including talking points and media training - Monitor media coverage and track press mentions - Identify opportunities for op-eds, contributed articles, and thought leadership appearances - Write or support development of thought leadership content - Position organizational leaders as experts in Black women's health and wellness - Content Development & Copywriting (30%) - Write compelling copy for marketing campaigns developed by VP of Brand Partnerships & Marketing - Write and edit email copy for member journeys, campaign emails, and member communications - Support campaign development with strong messaging and storytelling - Ensure all marketing copy aligns with brand voice and organizational values - Manage external comms vendors - Develop compelling narratives about GirlTREK's impact, mission, and community - Create member stories, testimonials, and impact case studies - Write content that brings programs to life and inspires action - Translate program work and data into accessible, engaging stories - Write partnership announcements, press releases, and communications materials - Support partnership activation with compelling messaging and copy - Develop content for partnership stewardship and reporting - Support VP of Philanthropy with donor communications and campaign materials - Write donor-facing content including impact reports, campaign appeals, and stewardship communications - Ensure donor communications align with organizational messaging - Crisis Communications & Issues Management (10%) - Develop and maintain crisis communications protocols and templates - Lead organizational communications response during crises or sensitive situations - Coordinate with leadership on messaging and response strategy - Manage issues as they arise with appropriate urgency and strategic thinking - Conduct communications risk assessment and prepare for potential issues Qualifications - 6-8 years experience in communications, PR, journalism, or related field - Exceptional writing and editing skills across multiple formats and audiences - Media relations experience including pitching, press releases, and journalist relationships - Strong storytelling abilities and narrative development skills - Strategic communications thinking and ability to develop messaging frameworks - Brand voice stewardship and consistency management - Ability to write compelling copy under deadline pressure - Strong project management and ability to manage multiple priorities Success Indicators - Media coverage secured including quality placements in target outlets - Messaging frameworks consistently applied across all touchpoints - Brand voice and communications quality maintained across all materials - Strong media relationships established and maintained - Copy quality and effectiveness demonstrated through campaign performance - Leadership satisfied with communications support and strategic counsel - Quick turnaround on high-quality written materials - Effective coordination with marketing and partnerships on integrated campaigns - Crisis communications handled effectively when needed Reporting Structure - Reports to: VP of Brand Partnerships & Marketing - Collaborates with: VP of Philanthropy, Programs leadership, President, Executive Director Compensation & Benefits - Position Type: Full-time, exempt - Location: Remote (with occasional travel for events and team meetings) - Salary: $90,800-$120,200 commensurate with experience & geographic location - Benefits: Comprehensive health coverage, 401(k) match, unlimited PTO, annual winter sabbatical (Dec 1-31), professional development support
Role Description We are seeking an experienced Human Resources professional to serve as our Fractional HR Director, providing strategic leadership and operational expertise on a part-time basis. This role is ideal for a seasoned HR leader who excels at building and optimizing people operations for growing organizations. The Fractional HR Director will work approximately 15-20 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling, to establish HR infrastructure, ensure compliance, and support our organizational culture and mission. Key Responsibilities - Strategic HR Leadership - Partner with executive leadership to align HR strategy with organizational goals and mission. - Assess current HR needs and develop a comprehensive roadmap for people operations development. - Provide guidance on organizational structure, workforce planning, and talent strategy. - Advise leadership on employee relations issues, performance management, and organizational culture. - Support board of directors on HR-related governance matters. - Employee Relations and Culture - Maintain strict confidentiality while supporting staff through conflict and de-escalation. - Apply sound judgment to determine when issues require escalation to leadership. - Draw on restorative and trauma-informed practices to repair harm and strengthen team relationships. - Foster a psychologically safe workplace. - Bring a culturally responsive lens to all HR functions. - Help mediate issues and promote open communication. - Measure and monitor employee satisfaction and organizational culture. - Impact Management and Professional Development - Manage and optimize the Impact Management process through Culture Amp. - Provide data-informed insights to leadership on team performance and engagement. - Coach managers on providing feedback and addressing performance issues. - Provide professional development resources for organization-wide training and individual growth. - HR Infrastructure Development & Compliance - Establish or refine and document existing core HR policies and procedures. - Create job descriptions, compensation frameworks, and organizational charts. - Implement HR technology solutions appropriate for organizational size and needs. - Ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local labor regulations. - Navigate complex organizational needs while upholding high ethical standards. - Compensation and Benefits - Utilize Payscale and other tools to design and maintain a transparent pay band structure. - Manage benefits administration including health insurance and retirement plans. - Coordinate annual compensation reviews and market benchmarking. - Serve as liaison with benefits brokers and payroll providers. - Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing in coordination with the finance team. - Act as the go-to person for HR and benefits questions. - Support the annual benefits renewal and communication process. - Talent Acquisition and Retention - Lead recruitment efforts for key positions, including strategy and sourcing. - Use JazzHR and JustWorks to manage the hiring workflow efficiently. - Build and maintain a candidate experience that reflects GirlTREK’s culture. - Develop interviewing processes and assessment tools. - Create offer letters and negotiate compensation packages. - Design and implement employee retention strategies and engagement initiatives. - Establish succession planning frameworks for critical roles. Qualifications - 8+ years of progressive HR or people operations experience; experience in a mission-driven or nonprofit setting preferred. - Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field. - Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws (FMLA, ADA, Title VII, FLSA, etc.). - Proven expertise in performance management, compensation design, and leadership coaching. - Hands-on experience with Culture Amp, JazzHR, Payscale, and JustWorks strongly preferred. - Exceptional emotional intelligence, discretion, and communication skills. - Deep understanding of culturally responsive HR practices and a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion. - Experience working fractionally or in a consulting capacity with growing teams. - Proven experience building HR functions from the ground up or scaling HR operations. - Demonstrated expertise in employee relations, compliance, and policy development. - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. - Strong business acumen and ability to think strategically while executing tactically. - Experience working independently with minimal supervision. - Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite. Time Commitment & Compensation - Approximately 15–20 hours per week, with flexibility based on project load and organizational needs. - Location: Remote from a home office. - Compensation: $5,500 per month.
