This role is designed for consultants who combine strong consulting fundamentals (structured problem solving, quantitative analysis, communication, and stakeholder management) with an interest in - and baseline understanding of – rail and transit systems. You will help clients solve complex, cross-functional problems spanning strategy, operations, organization, performance improvement, and implementation planning. You will work closely with client executives and functional leaders and will regularly collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts (SMEs). A key success factor is your ability to translate deep technical and operational input into clear, actionable, “consulting-grade” recommendations and deliverables. Tasks & Responsibilities: Client delivery (management consulting) Lead defined workstreams on consulting projects, interacting directly with clients and taking strategic goals from concept to well-defined implementation plans. Structure ambiguous problems into hypotheses, workplans, analyses, and clear decisions; ensure high-quality delivery on scope, timeline, and budget. Perform research and quantitative analyses; develop models and insights using Excel-based analysis and other tools as appropriate. Facilitate and document client workshops and working sessions; align stakeholders, drive outcomes, and communicate next steps. Create effective executive-ready communication material (PowerPoint storylines, reports, templates/tools) and present findings to executive and working-level audiences. Leveraging subject matter expertise Leverage the knowledge and expertise of Deutsche Bahn’s railway subject matter experts (and other SMEs) in projects where applicable. Bridge between technical SMEs and client decision-makers by translating specialized input into structured analyses, recommendations, and implementation roadmaps. Team leadership & development Instruct, supervise, and coach Analysts and Consultants on projects; provide guidance on both consulting methods and content. Contribute to internal capability building (best practices, benchmarks, templates, and reusable methods) for rail and transit consulting. Business development Participate in preparing proposals and pursuits, including project approaches, methodologies, budgets, schedules, and written content. Support development of client relationships and identify opportunities for future engagements; maintain strong client relationships. Requirements: MBA, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in any discipline, with demonstrated academic excellence and the ability to learn quickly and deliver results. 5+ years of relevant professional experience in management consulting, internal consulting, strategy, operations improvement, project delivery, or comparable roles. Prior management consulting experience is beneficial but not required if you demonstrate strong consulting fundamentals through your work. Some rail and transit systems knowledge / exposure (e.g., through prior project work, employment in the rail/transit ecosystem, or sustained domain focus). Outstanding analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently with an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. Strong written and verbal presentation and communication skills. Experience using MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) for analysis, quantitative models, and client-ready materials. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with strong interpersonal skills. Occasional domestic / international travel may be required. Preferred Qualifications: Deeper expertise in one or more rail domains (e.g., rolling stock and maintenance, fleet/asset management, operations and O&M, infrastructure/stations, customer experience, commercial/revenue, digital/technology enablement). Experience applying international best practices in rail/transit (benchmarking across operators/regions, standards-based approaches, and structured governance models). Exposure to enterprise asset management / maintenance management systems, data and KPI frameworks, and performance management in asset-intensive environments. Experience supporting change management and implementation planning in complex organizations. Working Conditions and Travel: You may primarily work from your home office and/or a well-lighted, heated and air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. Role Description The Senior Subject Matter Expert - Railway Vehicles (Mechanical) will support railway vehicle procurement and rebuild projects, including those involving locomotives, multiple units, light rail vehicles, street cars, and rail cars. A strong technical background in complex rail and transit vehicle procurement projects is required. This role involves the technical review of documentation for all phases of rolling stock procurement and integration, from specification development through commissioning and regulatory compliance, with a focus on mechanical systems. This role requires a strong understanding of rail vehicle systems, their design, and integration of sub-systems into the vehicle. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the person in this role will work closely with other subject matter experts, management consultants, railway vehicle manufacturers, regulators, and transit agency representatives to deliver innovative rail solutions. The person in this position will work independently, as part of a team, and may be required to manage the day-to-day activities of team members and subcontractors. An engineering license is an asset. - 10 or more years of experience providing mechanical subject expertise in railway vehicle procurement projects, with strong knowledge of project phases and interdependencies. Experience with zero-emission rail vehicle procurement is an asset. - Experience with railway vehicle rebuild projects, especially mechanical aspects such as carbody, trucks, and structural elements. - Experience working with passenger railway operators and railway vehicle owners, including State transportation departments, rail commissions/authorities, and transportation authorities. - Strong knowledge of relevant rail vehicle standards and recommended practices applicable to the North American market, including APTA, ASTM, AAR, EN, ISO, etc. - Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
