Software Developer - Combustion Modelling (Finite Volume CFD) We are seeking a highly motivated Software Developer with expertise in combustion modelling and finite volume CFD methods to join our CFD development team. In this role, you will contribute to the development, implementation, and optimization of advanced numerical models for reactive flows, supporting cutting-edge applications in powertrain, e mobility, thermal systems, and energy conversion. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: • Develop, implement, and maintain combustion and reactive-flow models within a finite volume CFD solver environment. • Enhance numerical algorithms to improve stability, accuracy, and computational performance, including adaptation for parallel and high performance computing environments. • Integrate new physical models into existing codebases following established software development processes and coding standards. • Conduct verification and validation of implemented models using experimental data and standardized CFD benchmarks. • Prepare technical documentation, including model descriptions, user guidelines, and internal design documentation. YOUR PROFILE: Required Qualifications • PhD (preferably PhD but possible also with master’s degree) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Computational Engineering, or a related technical discipline. • Strong theoretical understanding of combustion, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. • Experience with finite volume CFD methods and numerical discretization techniques. • Proficiency in C++ or Fortran for scientific or engineering software development; additional experience with Python is advantageous. • Experience working with version control systems (e.g., Git) and standard software development workflows. Preferred Qualifications • Experience with chemical kinetics, mechanism reduction, or chemistry solvers (e.g., CHEMKIN, Cantera). • Experience in high performance computing: MPI, multi-threading, or GPU acceleration. • Background with commercial or open source CFD tools (e.g., OpenFOAM, CCM+, CONVERGE, Ansys). • Understanding of automotive, aerospace, or energy sector applications. Role Description Test Technician remotely located at an AVL customer site(s) – participates in the daily activities in the lab with the customer at a professional level, including: - Set up, operation, and tear down of experimental engines and other drivetrain components in an engine dynamometer test cell or test environment. - Installs instrumentation on engine and performs dynamometer tests. - Supports other activities related to lab operations including calibration, maintenance, and housekeeping. Roles: - Is a primary AVL advocate and customer liaison. - Performs engine and test part installation and removal. - Conducts and observes standardized tests following test parameters and, as required, obtains and records data or ensures data has been captured by an automated system. - Troubleshoots problems encountered with test equipment or other items associated with conducting tests in field of specialization. - Diagnoses and conducts routine maintenance and repair on equipment, engines, etc. following established schedules and procedures. - Fabricates equipment and testing apparatus components following blueprints, engineering schematics, equipment manuals, handwritten or drawn notes. - Uses PC to generate reports and to store and retrieve data. - Engages in safe work practices and advises supervisor on improvements to test equipment fabrication, installation, and operation to ensure a safe laboratory operation. - Maintains a clean, professional, and organized work environment and appearance. - Communicates test status and results with internal and external customers. - Able to perform Lead Technician duties on a regular basis. - Ensures off shift operations are productive and customer needs are met. - Trains lower level Technicians. - Other tasks as assigned. Qualifications - Associate degree or equivalent training. - 5-7+ years of experience in the field or related area. - Computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. - Read and follow schematics; equipment manuals; blueprints and drawings; and sample preparation and testing procedures. - Application of mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Excellent housekeeping and organization skills. - Excellent troubleshooting skills. - Detailed understanding of standard concepts, practices, procedures, and equipment associated with dynamometer lab testing. - Extensive experience and proper judgment to plan and accomplish goals; able to lead and/or direct work of others. - Work without supervision and provides leadership to the team. - Able to use and master AVL products used in the course of normal testing.
