Role Description The Tutor Session Monitor is a critical behind-the-scenes role that keeps OpenLiteracy's tutoring program running smoothly every day. Reporting to the Director of Tutor Operations, you'll monitor live tutoring sessions, respond to tutor emergencies and technical issues in real time, and step in to teach when needed. During lighter hours, you'll also take on small operations tasks to support the broader team. Here's what makes this role unique: some shifts will call on you to think and move fast, but many shifts are quiet, and you're paid for every minute of them. In this role, you will shape engaging, high-impact learning experiences that resonate with a teen audience, helping them build both linguistic skills and cultural connection. - Teach online teen courses following the established curriculum syllabus. - Create compelling supplemental teaching materials tailored to the dynamic pacing of a teenage classroom. - Align with fellow instructors and maintain regular, timely communication with the Education & Family Department staff regarding schedules and course updates. - Participate in instructor meetings before and after each semester to discuss program enhancements and share insights. - Design and introduce new theme- or content-based courses aligned with student interests. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree required; an MA in a relevant field is preferred. - Minimum of one year of experience teaching the Japanese language in a structured classroom setting. - Proficient in video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Teams) and digital presentation tools. - Experience using digital tools for writing instruction (e.g., iPad/tablet and stylus, real-time annotation) is required. - Strong oral and written English communication skills. - Deep familiarity with modern language teaching methodologies; a passion for adopting innovative educational tech is a plus. - Must be a U.S. citizen, green card holder, or possess a valid U.S. work permit.
