Job Description

Data Engineer – Space

Defense Unicorns

• Deploy and harden UDS Data Capability in the mission hero's environment. • Own the integration with what they already have. • Build pipelines that move data through classification boundaries. • Operate what you deploy — initial day-2 ownership: capacity, performance, backup/restore (Velero). • Generate accreditation artifacts. • Be the voice of the mission hero back to product and engineering. • Train and transfer — leave the mission hero's team self-sufficient. • Grow junior Data Engineer FDEs.

Job Requirements

  • Data engineering breadth
  • Lakehouse & storage — production experience with Apache Iceberg (or Delta/Hudi), object storage (Ceph/S3-compatible), Postgres (including extensions like pgvector), and at least one columnar/OLAP engine (Trino, DuckDB, ClickHouse, Spark SQL).
  • Streaming & integration — Kafka (preferably Strimzi on Kubernetes), Flink or equivalent stream processing, CDC patterns (Debezium).
  • Pipelines & orchestration — Airflow, Dagster, Argo Workflows, or similar.
  • Governance, catalog & access — REST catalogs (Iceberg REST, Polaris/Gravitino/Nessie family), ABAC/RBAC patterns, OIDC/OAuth.
  • Data modeling & SQL — fluent in SQL; comfortable designing schemas for both analytical and operational workloads.
  • Kubernetes in production — deployments, operators, CRDs, storage classes, networking.
  • Linux fundamentals, container runtime behavior, networking, TLS, secrets management.
  • IaC (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar) and GitOps patterns (Flux, ArgoCD).
  • Active DoD security clearance required — TS/SCI preferred; minimum active Secret with the ability to obtain TS/SCI.
  • Comfort being the technical face of Defense Unicorns to a mission hero — listening before prescribing, writing clearly, briefing technical and non-technical stakeholders, and saying "I don't know yet, let me find out" without losing the room.
  • Self-direction. The mission hero's environment will surprise you, and the answer often isn't in the documentation yet — you'll write it.

**What Your Day Might Look Like:** - Design, build, and maintain data pipelines that serve models, data, and AI workflows to internal and client-facing applications. - Work across database types — relational, vector, and graph — modelling and storing data appropriately for each access pattern, in close collaboration with data scientists. - Build and maintain dbt models — writing transformation logic, tests, and documentation that ensure data quality and traceability end-to-end. - Operate what you build: instrument pipelines with logging, metrics, and tracing; diagnose and resolve production data issues before they become someone else's problem. - Write clean, tested, production-quality code and contribute to CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code. - Show up to code reviews, design discussions, and retrospectives — and have something worth saying.

• Architect and build production data pipelines and data platforms that serve models, data, and AI workflows to internal and client-facing applications — and stay accountable for them under live conditions. • Own non-functional quality across your domain: latency and throughput budgets, scalability, reliability, observability, and cost. • Lead the design and operation of multi-model data stores — relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL), vector (Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector), and graph (Neo4j, Neptune) — applying the right tool to each access pattern, not the most fashionable one. • Set technical direction: write design docs, make build-vs-buy calls, and defend your approach with evidence rather than instinct. • Work across the stack when the problem demands it — services, data access, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD — and diagnose it when things drift in production. • Raise the floor for the team: mentor mid-level and junior engineers, run rigorous code reviews, and hold the quality bar without making it someone else's job to ask you.
