Role Description We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for accomplished mathematics researchers based in India, with strong research backgrounds across pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical physics, theoretical computer science, statistics, or adjacent advanced quantitative disciplines. This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on advanced mathematical reasoning, proof evaluation, problem design, formal reasoning, conjecture exploration, and research-level mathematical assessment. Selected professionals may contribute expert judgment to challenging mathematical problems that require the depth, precision, and subtle reasoning ability of an active research mathematician rather than general textbook-level knowledge. Key Responsibilities - Mathematical Problem Design & Review - Author and review challenging mathematics problems requiring advanced research-level reasoning. - Create and evaluate tasks across areas such as number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, topology, analysis, PDEs, probability, combinatorics, dynamical systems, logic, representation theory, mathematical physics, theoretical computer science, or statistics. - Assess whether mathematical prompts, expected solutions, and evaluation criteria are rigorous, accurate, and appropriately challenging. - Help ensure technical materials reflect the standards of working research mathematicians. - Proof Evaluation & Mathematical Reasoning - Evaluate outputs involving proof construction, proof verification, problem-solving, formalization, and conjecture exploration. - Identify subtle mathematical errors such as unjustified steps, misapplied hypotheses, hand-waved lemmas, incomplete arguments, or plausible but incorrect proofs. - Provide detailed feedback on mathematical correctness, logical structure, rigor, clarity, and field-specific reasoning quality. - Surface areas where current reasoning systems struggle with advanced mathematical concepts and proof-level precision. - Research-Level Review & Technical Judgment - Review mathematical content for alignment with current research standards, accepted terminology, and field-specific methods. - Interpret complex mathematical arguments using professional research judgment. - Assess edge cases, ambiguous reasoning paths, hidden assumptions, and nuanced proof strategies. - Contribute expertise on how active researchers approach mathematical uncertainty, abstraction, and proof validation. - Documentation & Collaboration - Document review decisions, mathematical reasoning, assumptions, and quality concerns clearly. - Collaborate with program teams and other senior contributors to uphold high mathematical review standards. - Provide structured feedback that can support improved mathematical evaluation workflows. - Contribute to high-quality standards for advanced mathematics review projects. Qualifications - Advanced research experience in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical physics, theoretical computer science, statistics, or a closely related field. - Active or recent research role as a PhD candidate, postdoctoral researcher, instructor, faculty member, principal researcher, industry research mathematician, or comparable contributor. - Strong publication record, especially first-author or sole-author work in respected mathematics or adjacent research venues. - Research output that demonstrates depth, originality, rigor, and advanced mathematical reasoning. - Ability to evaluate complex mathematical arguments, identify subtle errors, and explain proof-level reasoning clearly. - Strong written English communication skills and comfort working independently in a remote, part-time consulting environment. - Current location in India. Requirements - PhD training, postdoctoral training, or advanced doctoral-level research experience in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, theoretical computer science, mathematical physics, or a related STEM field is strongly preferred. - Outstanding senior PhD students and recent graduates with strong publication records are encouraged to apply. - Training at a highly regarded mathematics, STEM, or research institution is especially relevant. - Equivalent high-level research experience may also be considered when supported by strong publications, awards, grants, or comparable research output. Nice to Have - First-author or sole-author publications in journals such as Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, Journal of the AMS, Acta Mathematica, Duke Mathematical Journal, Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, Geometry & Topology, JEMS, GAFA, Advances in Mathematics, Probability Theory and Related Fields, Annals of Statistics, or respected specialty journals. - Publications or strong research credentials in adjacent top-tier venues such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, or comparable theoretical computer science venues. - Competitive fellowships, awards, or honors such as Clay Research Fellowship, NSF GRFP, NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, Sloan Research Fellowship, Packard Fellowship, Simons Fellowship, Simons Investigator, AMS Centennial Fellowship, Hertz Fellowship, Marshall Scholarship, Rhodes Scholarship, New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, Salem Prize, Ramanujan Prize, or equivalent distinctions. - Earlier-career signals such as Putnam Fellow placement, International Mathematical Olympiad medals, or comparable high-level mathematical distinctions. - NSF CAREER or other grants where the contributor was a named PI or co-PI. - Experience with mathematical peer review, proof checking, formalization, problem design, research mentorship, or advanced mathematical exposition. Why This Opportunity - Remote, part-time consulting work aligned with advanced mathematics research expertise. - Opportunity to contribute to challenging mathematical reasoning, proof evaluation, and research-level problem design projects. - Suitable for mathematicians who enjoy rigorous proof analysis, subtle error detection, formal reasoning, and high-quality technical review. - Flexible engagement designed for accomplished researchers who can contribute expert judgment alongside existing academic, research, or industry commitments. Contract Details - Independent contractor engagement. - Fully remote and flexible scheduling. - Eligible candidates must be based in India. - Part-time commitment of approximately 8–20 hours per week, depending on project needs and availability. - Competitive hourly compensation in the range of $40–$60/hour, depending on research seniority, credentials, project scope, and fit. - Payments are made weekly via Stripe or Wise based on services rendered. - Projects may continue as long as the relevant workstream requires the contributor's expertise. - Projects may be extended, shortened, adjusted, or concluded based on project needs and performance. - Work must not involve sharing confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, laboratory, institution, or research group.
