The Opportunity You will own the full technical strategy for a platform at meaningful scale, built on SQL Server, .NET, and a jQuery front end, serving printing operations across ANZ, North America, and Europe. The engineering organization spans approximately 20 developers across printIQ and Docket Manager, with deep product knowledge and long tenure. North American growth is accelerating, and the opportunity is to define the long-range technical vision, shift engineering investment toward strategic initiatives, and build an AI strategy that creates durable competitive distance in a vertical the major ERPs do not touch. This is a role for a builder who wants to shape the next generation of two market-leading platforms inside a permanent ownership structure with no exit clock. You will join printIQ directly as a core member of the leadership team, reporting to the CEO. You will own the full technology strategy, engineering organization, product delivery, and platform architecture. The platform has to be reliable, the data has to be an asset, and the opportunity to create competitive distance through AI is real. What You Will Own Technology and Architecture - Define and execute the technical vision for the printIQ and Docket Manager platforms, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and built for the next phase of growth. - Drive platform modernization: infrastructure, APIs, performance, and security posture. - Design a data architecture that serves analytics, BI, and AI as a unified estate, positioning the company for AI capabilities competitors using generic models cannot replicate. - Lead adoption of AI-assisted development practices to increase engineering throughput and embed intelligent workflows into the product. - Manage technical debt pragmatically, balancing remediation with forward momentum. Leadership and Engineering Culture - Build and lead a high-performing engineering organization of approximately 20 developers across printIQ and Docket Manager, hiring well, setting clear expectations, and developing the next layer of technical leadership. - Evolve engineering practices, development standards, and delivery rhythms to support the next phase of growth. - Champion AI-native ways of working and invest in the team's continued growth. - Lead a multi-geography team spanning New Zealand, North America, and the UK, bringing external perspective and best practices to a deeply experienced group. Cross-Functional Partnership - Serve as the CEO's primary technology co-strategist on business direction, product decisions, and market positioning. - Partner with the CEO to translate the company's growth plan into a concrete technical strategy and AI roadmap that drives profitable revenue. - Identify where AI and platform capabilities can reshape market position and create durable competitive advantage. - Represent the technology vision with conviction in executive, customer, and board conversations. - Push back constructively on decisions that trade short-term feature velocity for long-term platform health. What We Are Looking For The Head of Engineering we are looking for is a proven SaaS engineering leader who has fundamentally rewired how they build and deliver software in the age of AI. This is not a traditional CTO role. It demands someone who holds deep technical expertise and engineering leadership in equal measure, leads with an AI-first approach, and is energized by transformation rather than threatened by it. They are close enough to the code and infrastructure to stay personally connected while bringing the leadership maturity that comes from having done this before in equally or more sophisticated organizations. They choose this environment because it offers something bigger organizations cannot: the ability to own the entire technical foundation, shape engineering culture, and drive transformation with their own hands on the work. Must-Haves - Led an engineering organization through a major platform transition (replatforming, modernization, cloud migration, or acquisition integration) while maintaining delivery throughput. - Shipped AI-embedded product capabilities with measurable customer outcomes, or led sustained AI experimentation with clear conviction about where it creates durable value. - Owned a SaaS platform’s security posture and compliance requirements (SOC 2, industry-specific standards) without relying on a dedicated security team. - Designed or redesigned a data architecture that serves analytics, BI, and AI as a unified asset. - Built and scaled an engineering team, including hiring technical talent, developing engineers into leaders, and managing performance directly. - Served as a CEO’s or GM’s primary technology partner, representing the technical vision in executive, board, or customer conversations. - Made architecture and infrastructure investment decisions with direct commercial rationale (tied to retention, revenue, or competitive positioning). - Identified a commercial or product opportunity from a technical vantage point that others in the organization may have not seen. The expected base salary for this position is approximately: USD $200,000 - $250,000 excluding annual bonus and equity (when applicable).
