The primary purpose of this role is to underwrite a sustainable portfolio of business in accordance with the AAL Underwriting Framework, Allianz Standards for Underwriting (ASU) and delegated authority levels. About the role - Provide advanced underwriting support by delivering quotations, managing complex new business and renewals, and offering technical guidance, coaching, and leadership to regional Underwriters and the wider Commercial team. - Take ownership of technical underwriting activities, including complex prospecting, pipelining, renewal management, and underwriting decisions within delegated authority. - Lead, coach, and develop team capability to build high‑performing, collaborative, and engaged underwriting teams that consistently meet quality and service standards. - Manage workflows for complex accounts across new business, renewals, and policy maintenance, ensuring underwriting governance, accurate referrals, and alignment with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite. - Drive profitable growth by identifying and maximising new business opportunities, retaining key accounts, supporting negotiations, gathering market intelligence, and building strong relationships with brokers, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders. About you - Relevant tertiary qualifications or Insurance Studies with extensive experience in a complex commercial underwriting environment, including strong knowledge of regulatory and legislative compliance requirements. - Strong relationship‑building skills with the ability to proactively engage stakeholders, build professional networks, and collaborate effectively to achieve positive business outcomes. - Highly developed analytical, critical thinking, and decision‑making capabilities, with proven ability to interpret complex data, identify trends, assess risk, and exercise sound judgement. - Excellent organisational and communication skills, demonstrating high attention to detail, ability to manage competing priorities, and deliver high‑quality customer-focused outcomes with clarity and influence. - A passion for leveraging emerging technologies to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. This is a leadership role within a growing, specialist underwriting team responsible for combining general liability and pollution capabilities into a more integrated client solution. As a Lead Underwriter, you will develop, underwrite, and manage a national portfolio of complex product Liability & pollution risk while helping to shape underwriting strategy, distribution, and team development within our environmental practice. Role Overview This position is responsible for underwriting and portfolio management of complex environmental casualty risks, with a focus on manufacturing/product exposures. The role combines day-to-day deal execution with broader responsibilities across strategy, relationship management, and team development. You will operate with a high level of autonomy while contributing to longer-term initiatives tied to portfolio growth, product evolution, and market positioning.
