We are seeking an R&D-focused Software Engineer to support advanced development, experimentation, and prototyping across software, AI, and emerging technologies. This role blends strong software engineering fundamentals with exploratory research, proof-of-concept development, and applied innovation. The position is hands-on and technical, emphasizing modular design, multi-platform development, and the ability to move concepts from experimentation into practical, supportable solutions. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working in uncertain problem spaces, evaluating new technologies, and building early-stage solutions that may evolve into production systems. What You Will Do * Participate in applied research and advanced development initiatives across software, AI, and systems engineering. * Translate research concepts and experimental ideas into working proof-of-concepts and early-stage implementations. * Collaborate with engineering, product, and architecture teams to transition viable R&D outcomes toward operational use. * Perform all stages of the software development life cycle, self-manage activities on smaller projects and serve as technical lead on small, medium and large projects. * Determine operating requirements, costs, as well as resource needs for assigned projects and work in conjunction with a project manager on initiatives. * Co-lead with Project Manager employing object-oriented analysis and design techniques including use case analysis, object modeling, and database schema design to ensure business requirements and design goals are met. * Participate in application architecture planning including system partitioning and framework design to determine optimal solution architecture, efficiency, maintainability, and scalability. * Lead and develop high-level system narratives, storyboards, and user interface prototypes. * Lead and develop detailed design specifications for hardware and software use by the technical team. * Lead and develop system test plans, ensure software quality assurance standards are achieved, and validate that business goals are accomplished. * Develop applications to CDW coding standards and quality. * Identify issues that require more attention and work to resolve issues based on an understanding of the business problem being solved. * Make technical decisions to meet the design goals laid out in the product roadmap and by management. * Coach, mentor, and monitor progress of junior members. * Draw appropriate resources together to address technical issues. * Direct and focus the efforts of the technical project team. * Complete projects and tasks on a timely basis according to commitments made to stakeholders and management. * Report project and task status to management. What We Expect of You * 7+ years application development experience. * 4+ years' experience with Automation platform framework. * 4+ years' experience with Public Cloud providers (Azure, AWS, GCP). * 7+ years application experience with major Healthcare EMR (MEDITECH, Cerner/Oracle, or Epic). * Knowledge and practical application of the healthcare application ecosystem and integration between healthcare applications including EMR, departmental applications, and application delivery platforms. * Proficiency in one or more programming languages including C, C#, C++, Python, Java, or HTML. * Experience with automation tools including Ansible and Terraform. * Ability to build and maintain development environments using virtualization and container technologies. * Experience with Postgres and SQL databases. * Experience developing software solutions for Windows and Linux platforms with contributions to macOS, iOS, and Android environments. * Experience developing and integrating AI toolsets and machine learning models into experimental and applied systems. * Experience with HL7 and FHIR development. * Experience with API integration development. * Knowledge of firewalls and network security concepts. * Demonstrated expertise in software engineering, platform development, and solution architecture. * Ability to balance exploratory R&D work with sound engineering discipline. * Experience with source control systems such as Azure DevOps and Git. * Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others. * Demonstrated ability to build rapport and maintain productive working relationships cross-functionally. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with senior leadership. * Strong organizational, planning, and creative problem-solving skills with attention to detail. * Proven track record of leading application development projects. * Ability to balance competing priorities and adapt to changing business needs while meeting deadlines. * Ability to perform effective code reviews and recommend automated review tools. * Ability to think through performance requirements and lead system optimization. * Contribution to the design, development, and maintenance of TC platforms to enhance performance, security, and scalability. * Robotics and autonomous systems experience, is a plus. * Experience with robotic programming including navigation, object recognition, training, and communication, is a plus. * Familiarity with ROS1 or ROS2, is a plus. * Experience with mechanical manipulation or robotics system integration, is a plus. * Experience with 3D virtual reality programming, simulation, or visualization environments, is a plus. About The Role: We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Safety Design Software Architect to join our Software Safety team in the Autonomous Vehicles (AV) organization. As a member of the AV Software Safety team, the Safety Design Software Architect leads and supports safety initiatives in all phases of system development (concept, requirements, design, implementation, verification and validation) for software that is core to our AV systems. You will conduct safety analyses and create runtime safety requirements for components of the AV software stack and will provide guidance to the software development teams to develop and verify safe software solutions for our future vehicles.
