Librarian - Specialized Services
State of Maine
Role Description This position is integral to the support of libraries across the state of Maine. This position will provide technical and customer support for online library services made available through Maine InfoNet, the University of Maine System, and the Maine State Library. This position provides first level support for various online library services managed through Maine InfoNet, such as the MILS, Minerva, and University of Maine State Library and Dirigo catalogs, the inter-library lending system MaineCat, statewide research tools, and the Maine InfoNet Download Library. This position works closely with the staff of Maine InfoNet on various ongoing and short-term projects that require knowledge of library practices and use of technology in developing solutions to problems. - Provides basic technical support via ticketing system, video, telephone, and email to resolve problems encountered by users relating to online library resources and services. - Responds to requests for support and changes to the various library systems coming from library staff at supported institutions and systems. - Supports libraries with data, system statistics, and training needs. - Develops and maintains excellent communication with library staff at supported institutions. - Represents Maine InfoNet at various stakeholder meetings. - Coordinates operations with Maine InfoNet staff and staff of libraries across the state. Library Systems Management - Responsible for ensuring reliability and functioning of various library systems. - Performing regular and routine systems maintenance including software management and configuration within the catalog, the Download Library system, and other library services. - Supporting automation of library activities through use of tools such as scripting, SQL, and artificial intelligence. - Analyzing, manipulating, and managing the loading and batch processing of library bibliographic, item, and patron records within various supported library systems. - Working in conjunction with other Maine InfoNet staff on ongoing and short-term library technology projects as they arise. Qualifications - Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials, and practices. - Knowledge of technology, metadata, and other standards related to library management systems. - At least 1 year of back-end experience with one or more of the following Library Management Systems: Polaris, Sierra, Alma. - Knowledge of scripting, programming tools, basic SQL queries, and related technologies. - Ability to explain library policies, objectives, and facilities to community groups, public officials, and the public. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. - Knowledge of collecting and analyzing data to make data-driven decisions. - Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. - Ability to analyze, interpret, and present highly technical concepts and requirements to a variety of audiences in both small and large settings. - Ability to research specialized subject areas, analyze complex data, and develop summaries and/or reports of findings. - Ability to apply critical thinking, qualitative, and quantitative reasoning to resolve complex problems. Requirements - Master’s Degree in Library Science and two (2) years experience in professional library work including experience in the field of specialization, -OR- an acceptable equivalent combination of related experience and/or training in the required specialty. Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience: - Knowledge of Maine State Library policies and procedures. - At least 1 year of professional experience with scripting, programming tools, basic SQL queries, and related technologies. - At least 1 year of professional experience collecting and analyzing data to make data-driven decisions.
