Senior Backend Engineer

InvestEngine

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services in Python 3.11 using Django / DRF • Lead architectural discussions and contribute to long-term technical strategy • Work with MySQL and Redis to optimize performance and scalability • Build and improve RESTful APIs for internal and external integrations • Continuously improve system performance, reliability, and scalability as we grow • Collaborate with Product, Compliance, and Business teams to deliver impactful features and automate back office processes and workflows • Investigate and resolve production issues, identify bottlenecks, and reduce tech debt • Apply best practices in Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity, GitHub Actions), and code quality • Drive improvements in our architecture, development processes, and internal tooling

Job Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in backend development
  • Strong Python skills and deep knowledge of Django (or similar frameworks)
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, caching, and high-performance backend systems
  • Experience with REST APIs, service design, and distributed systems
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and take ownership of architectural decisions
  • Familiarity with Git, CI/CD practices, and modern development workflows
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • English (B2 level or higher) and fluent Russian

As a Mid-Level Backend Developer, you will contribute to the design and development of Python microservices and internal tooling, working closely with senior engineers and technical leads. Location: Remote from Portugal / Remote EU Reporting to: Senior Engineer / Technical Lead What you will do:   - Develop and maintain Python microservices supporting internal gateway tooling and platform improvements. - Implement backend features following technical specifications and architectural guidance. - Integrate third-party APIs and services into existing and new systems. - Support improvements to legacy and modern systems, including API abstraction layers. - Collaborate with senior engineers and DevOps on CI/CD, deployments, and monitoring. - Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code. - Participate in code reviews and team technical discussions. - Help identify bugs, performance issues, and contribute to fixes and improvements. - Learn and contribute to system design decisions over time. You will work closely with Core Gateway, DevOps, and Platform teams to reduce complexity in legacy systems and improve system-wide efficiency. Location: Remote from Portugal  Reporting to: Group CTO What you will do:   - Design and build scalable Python-based microservices supporting a new internal gateway enablement platform. - Take ownership of system architecture decisions, ensuring long-term scalability, performance, and maintainability. - Develop tools and services that improve efficiency of existing Core Gateway and Gateway Projects teams. - Integrate and abstract third-party APIs and payment-related external services. - Define engineering standards for the SWAT team (coding practices, API design, service structure). - Collaborate closely with DevOps to design and improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, and observability. - Lead code reviews and ensure high engineering quality across the team. - Work across legacy (Perl) and modern systems, enabling gradual modernization. - Identify bottlenecks in existing systems and design technical solutions to remove them. - Act as a technical reference point within the SWAT team.
