Electrical Engineer II - Power System Study

RRC Power and Energy

Role Description RRC is seeking a talented Electrical Engineer II – Power Systems Studies to help us build the future of both U.S. and Canada energy production from both remote work locations and any one of our US or Canadian office locations. - Perform power system studies including support for wind and solar plant interconnection studies at development, construction, and operational stages. - Assist with system impact studies, power flow, short circuit, grounding, reactive power, and related analyses. - Support electromagnetic transient, insulation coordination study, and TOV studies using tools such as PSCAD or EMTP-RV. - Utilize software such as ETAP, ASPEN, CYMCAP, SKM, PSSE, PSLF, or similar tools to conduct engineering analyses. - Prepare clear, accurate, and well-organized technical reports. - Coordinate with internal teams including engineers, designers, and project managers to support project execution. - Interface with clients on technical matters with guidance, including responding to data requests and assisting with study inputs. - Ensure work is completed in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and company QA/QC procedures. - Assist in the development and improvement of internal standards, tools, and processes. - Support proposal development by contributing technical input and scope details. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Engineering, or related field. - 5+ years of power system study experience in power delivery, renewable energy, or power generation. - Master’s degree in Engineering or renewable energy focus is a plus. - Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation required; Professional Engineering registration license or ability to obtain license. - Must be authorized to work full-time in Canada. - Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (ANSI/IEEE, NESC, NEC, CSA, IEC, etc.). - Knowledge of renewable energy industry relating to utility scale wind and solar projects a plus. - Experience supporting multi-discipline engineering projects. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). - Familiarity with power system analysis tools (ETAP, PSCAD, ASPEN, PSSE, etc.). - Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. - Effective written and verbal communication skills. - Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. - Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and grow technically. - Ability to travel up to 10%. Qualifications - We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position. - This position requires a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree. - 12 or more years experience designing substations at 138kV and above. - PE license. - Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role. - Experience in writing and providing support documentation for relay calculations. - Experience with the design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. - Proficiency with any of the following programs: SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or vendor software. - Familiarity with design codes and standards, such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI. - Experience with various vendor protective relay equipment typically used in substation protection, including SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, and Basler. - Proficiency with MS Office applications. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Requirements - A Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering degree is preferable. - A degree from an ABET accredited engineering program. - Prior experience is desirable to include in-line, bus and equipment protection, breaker, transformer and similar equipment control, RTU and data concentrator based SCADA systems, telemetering and communications (fiber optics, microwave, power line carrier, etc.). - AutoCAD or MicroStation experience. - Construction and start-up experience. - Testing or commissioning experience. Role Description Piq Energy is looking for a talented transmission planning engineer with coding experience to expand our US team! You will design, build, test, and iterate on our core autonomous grid planning product. In addition, you will be managing grid data and models, support our power system analytics team and our users! Qualifications - Degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems. - At least 5 years of industry experience in roles at a utility, system operator, engineering consultancy or similar. - High interconnection fluency (cluster processes, study phases, upgrades/costs, queue dynamics). - Good understanding of technical standards and regulations related to electricity grid planning, development, operation, and interconnection. - Hands-on experience with commercial power system analysis tools for steady-state and dynamic studies and plant model building (e.g., PSSE, TARA, PowerWorld). - Proven ability to manage and maintain detailed electricity network models. - Working knowledge in Python, particularly for automating grid studies, performing data analysis, and generating reports. - Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively. - Excellent collaboration and communication skills with a strong customer-focused mindset. Requirements - Experience with open source power system simulation software (e.g. PowSyBl, pandapower, PyPSA). - Experience with advanced analysis techniques, such as stability, EMT, or real-time simulations. - Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git), modern software development tools and frameworks, containerization (e.g., Docker), and cloud computing platforms. - Working knowledge of the CIM (Common Information Model) standard for power systems.
