Role Description The Public Health Vocabulary SME designs, develops and implements solutions for software integration projects, coordinates applications across functions or between organizations. Ensures the integration of projects meets the requirements of the organization. Applies specific functional knowledge and working/general industry knowledge. Applies subject matter expertise to public health programs at the state, local, and federal levels. Interprets and implements new and existing standards and applies them to clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological settings. Works with development organizations to develop new standards. Assists with improving the quality of collected and produced data. - Design and Implement Terminology Solutions: Develop and implement solutions for integrating public health coding systems and standards, such as LOINC, SNOMED, ICD-10, and FHIR, to ensure seamless data exchange and analysis across clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological settings. - Provide Data Standards Strategy and Modernization Support: Offer expert guidance on data standards and vocabulary authoring procedures to support the modernization of terminology tooling at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ensuring data quality and consistency. - Map Laboratory Assays to Vocabulary Standards: Research and map complex scientific and laboratory assays to established vocabulary standards, enabling accurate data collection, analysis, and surveillance in public health settings. - Collaborate with Development Organizations: Work with development organizations to create new standards and improve existing ones, staying up to date with emerging trends and technologies in public health informatics and surveillance. - Analyze and Improve Data Quality: Apply advanced data science expertise to analyze and improve the quality of collected and produced data, promoting effective data collection, analysis, and surveillance in public health programs at the state, local, and federal levels. Qualifications - Education: Bachelor’s Degree - Experience: - 10+ years’ experience as a public health terminologist - Experience working with public health coding systems and standards, including LOINC, SNOMED, ICD-10, USCDI+, FHIR or other Health Level 7 (HL7) messaging - Knowledge of Vocabulary Authoring procedures - Ability to provide data standards strategy and modernization support for terminology tooling at CDC - Ability to research and understand complex scientific and laboratory and surveillance nomenclature - Ability to map laboratory assays to vocabulary standards - Nice to Have: - Experience in a state, local, or federal public health environment - Experience with implementing public health standards to health or laboratory systems - Experience with data management and analysis using tools, including Excel, SQL, SAS, R, or Python - Experience with PHINVADS - Knowledge of infectious disease surveillance and informatics - Ability to apply advanced data science expertise to promote data collection and analysis - MA or MS degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or health informatics Requirements - Integrity and Accountability: Someone with a principled character who consistently demonstrates honesty, integrity, and accountability in their work. - Respect and Diversity: Someone who treats others with dignity, civility, consideration, and fairness, valuing different perspectives and experiences. - Effective Communication: Someone who conveys written and verbal information professionally and in a timely manner. - Interpersonal Skills: Someone who possesses strong interpersonal skills, fostering positive relationships and promoting a collaborative atmosphere. - Continuous Improvement: Someone who regularly assesses their performance and skills, pursuing ways to grow and improve. Job Overview: The Public Services Specialist I will be one of two front desk staff at SLCC’s central library branch, the Markosian Library, that provides excellent service to students, faculty, staff and community members. The Markosian Library serves an average of 13,000+ patrons each month and the Specialist I is responsible for engaging all patrons with professionalism, respect and courtesy, reflecting the Public Services department’s mission and vision. This position will work under the direction and guidance of the afternoon Supervisor at the Circulation Desk. The work schedule will be between 10-25 hours per week and all shifts will be at the Redwood Markosian Library. Available shifts include: Monday: 12:15 pm – 5:15 pm Tuesday: 12:15 pm – 5:15 pm Wednesday: 12:15 pm – 5:15 pm Thursdays: 12:15 pm – 5:15 pm Friday: 12:15 pm – 6:05 pm* *Hours may change based on College academic year schedule adjustments such as breaks, final exams, and summer library hours. Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities Primary Responsibilities Assist library patrons by performing various duties at the circulation desk. This includes but is not limited to: - Serves as the initial contact for all patrons - Assisting patrons with basic reference and non-research questions. - Assisting patrons with retrieval of library materials, both physical and electronic - Assisting patrons with accessing and utilizing library computers and printing - Answering the telephones and directing callers to appropriate SLCC department - Assist in daily cafe operations by restocking the café as needed and utilizing the cash register to sell prepackaged food, load money onto student ID cards and process book sale purchases. - Conduct hourly building walkthroughs. - Checkout library materials to students including laptops, books, anatomy models, etc. - Assist in the equipment contract process when circulating laptops and hotspots. - Connect patrons to other library and internal SLCC departments to resolve inquiries and needs - Provide directional assistance to patrons in areas both inside and outside the library - Assist in closing the library in accordance with Library policy when working a closing shift.
