Who are we? Fuel is on a mission to unlock billions of dollars in GDP by helping SMBs make better financial decisions every day. We manage over $500M in customer P&Ls through our FP&A platform, combining AI with hands-on CFO expertise to deliver enterprise-grade finance - without the enterprise price tag or complexity. fuelfinance.me www.instagram.com/fuelfinance youtu.be/eI5VH2Ks9o4 Who are we searching for? We're looking for a Head of Engineering who's already been the senior technical person at a small startup — writing code, making architecture calls, and keeping founders in the loop without being asked. You'll own engineering fully — the team, the delivery, the architecture, the quality bar, and the overall engineering state of the company. This is not a coordination role. You'll write production code daily on the hardest problems: AI agents, MCP infrastructure, forecasting systems, and financial analytics. You'll be the person who says what's doable, shapes scope, and decides how the team works. The team is 4 engineers, 1 QA, and 1 Product Owner. The direction is set — we're looking for someone to run the room. If that matches your experience, let's talk. What are your responsibilities? - Build and maintain the forecasting agent and financial analytics platform - Develop MCPs and the agent orchestration layer - Own dashboards, access controls, and reporting infrastructure - Build the AI coding culture across the team — by example, not by policy - Drive end-to-end engineering delivery: planning, estimation, and accountability - Own technical architecture across the full stack and AI layer - Negotiate and control scope — before it reaches the team - Maintain code quality, CI/CD, automated testing, and deployments - Run 1:1s, give feedback, and support engineer growth - Lead hiring as the team scales - Send engineering reports proactively — blockers, throughput, what changed, and why - Translate technical constraints into business language for founders and non-technical stakeholders What are the preferred requirements for the role? - 5+ years of engineering experience, 2+ years as Tech Lead or Head of Engineering at a startup under 50 people — still writing code daily - TypeScript / Node.js · React, ideally NestJS knowledge - Shipped AI in production: LLM integration / RAG, agents, MCP — real users, not demos - Daily AI tooling: Claude Code, Cursor, Augment, or equivalent - People leadership experience: 1:1s, feedback, hiring - B2B SaaS experience, preferably in fintech or a data-heavy domain - Clear and proactive communication with C-level executives - C1 English Good to have: - Financial API integrations: QuickBooks, Xero, Stripe, or similar - FP&A domain: P&L, forecasting, budget vs. actuals - Side projects or open source built with AI tooling - Experience with MCPs and agent orchestration Reporting Structure: reporting to the CEO Recruitment Process: - Recruiter interview - Tech fit & live coding session with Fuel engineers - System Design and Behavioural interview with Fractional CTO - Culture fit interview with the CEO Why work with us? - You'll own engineering fully — not inherit someone else's decisions - Work on real AI: production agents, MCP infrastructure, financial intelligence that SMBs actually depend on - Small team, high trust — no politics, no layers, no meaningless meetings - Competitive salary + equity - Freedom to define how engineering works — tooling, process, standards are yours to set - Flexible schedule and async-friendly culture - 18 days paid vacation per year + paid sick leave - You'll see the impact of your work directly — in the product, in the team, and in the businesses we serve
We're hiring an Engineering Manager to lead our frontend engineering organization - two development teams and a frontend QA team, totalling ~16 engineers. This is a people-first leadership role for someone with deep technical credibility: you'll spend approximately 60% of your time on people management (coaching, development, team building) and 40% on technical oversight (architecture, code reviews, technical strategy). You don't need to write production code daily, but you should be comfortable diving into technical discussions, reviewing complex pull requests, making informed architectural decisions, and debugging critical issues when needed. Hands-on coding ability is a strong plus. You'll own the evolution of our frontend platforms (React-based Rhino Play and Next.js-based Rhino Next) while building a culture of quality, velocity, and continuous improvement across all brands. Work Arrangement: Candidates based in Malta or Bitola will work in a hybrid arrangement. Remote candidates from other European locations are welcome and expected to work aligned with Central European Time (CET) You'll Be Responsible For People Leadership & Development (60%) - Lead, mentor, and develop ~12 frontend engineers and 4 frontend QA engineers across distributed locations (Malta, Bitola, and remote) - Conduct regular 1:1s, provide actionable feedback, and create personalized career development plans that help engineers reach their potential - Build a high-trust, high-performance culture where engineers feel challenged, supported, and excited to grow - Manage the frontend QA team, focusing on their professional development, test strategy, automation, and integration with development workflows - Own recruitment, onboarding, and retention for frontend and QA roles - Foster a culture aligned with Rhino's values: Community, Curiosity, and Achievers - Support diverse, dynamic teams and ensure fairness in career development opportunities Technical Strategy & Oversight (40%) - Shape the future of Rhino's frontend architecture in partnership with Product, Design, and Backend leadership - Make informed technical decisions on Next.js architecture, Server/Client Components, SSR strategies, and performance optimization - Review complex technical designs and pull requests; provide technical guidance and unblock challenging problems - Champion modern practices and tools: component libraries, Storybook, Redux Toolkit, Jest, service workers, CI/CD pipeline enhancements, performance monitoring - Ensure consistent approaches to authentication/authorization, session handling, and secure SSR patterns across brands - Guide decisions around build systems (Webpack, Turbopack, Turborepo) and monorepo architecture - Stay technically credible enough to earn respect from senior engineers and guide technical direction effectively - Debug complex frontend and server-side issues when your expertise is needed Delivery & Quality - Drive predictable delivery through clear goals, effective processes, and team rituals - Elevate code quality through strong review culture (acting as a gatekeeper when needed), testing standards, and automation - Partner with frontend QA team to strengthen test coverage (Jest, integration testing), reduce regressions, and increase release confidence - Oversee and optimize the release process to ensure smooth product deployments across all brands - Establish and track metrics that matter: team health, velocity trends, quality indicators, deployment frequency, and player-facing performance - Proactively identify patterns in production errors and drive systematic improvements Cross-Functional Collaboration - Translate product priorities into clear, achievable technical plans - Facilitate smooth collaboration between frontend, backend, design, product, and QA teams - Communicate technical tradeoffs, progress, and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders - Act as the voice of frontend engineering in leadership discussions - Bridge gaps and resolve blockers across teams
