Role Description Global Language Strategies, a business headquartered in the Washington, D.C. region, is currently seeking a professional freelance linguist to translate, edit, and/or transcribe legal documents from English to Japanese. This is a remote position, as needed. - Provide accurate translation, editing of documents, and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from English to Japanese. - Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms. - Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language. - Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale. - Translate, edit, and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards. - Use domain-specific terminology. - Review and certify other translators’ work quality, as needed. - Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. - Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio. Qualifications - A U.S. citizen willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance. - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. - At least 3 years of experience in legal documentation, translating, and/or editing between English and a foreign language. - At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription. - Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s). - Proficient in Microsoft Office. - Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as Trados. • Conduct impact litigation on a range of issues in collaboration with litigation teams • Identify and develop litigation in federal and state courts with supervision and support • Develop and maintain a significant litigation case load in state and/or federal court • Strategically, creatively, and boldly use plaintiff-driven, community-grounded impact litigation • Advance NILC’s administrative and legislative advocacy by providing legal analysis and technical assistance • Develop community education materials, co-create webinars, and provide Know Your Rights (KYR) presentations • Collaborate with staff across the organization via Programs workgroups • Represent NILC with coalition partners and in media • Teach and mentor Staff Attorneys, interns, legal fellows as needed • Proactively report to relevant staff and leadership • Successfully engage in/support policy advocacy, campaigns, and community outreach • Support and strengthen internal protocols and communication

The American Family Insurance Legal Department is seeking an experienced Coverage Counsel who has demonstrated the ability to multi-task, work independently and in team settings, and deliver results. You will provide legal support for the Claims departments at the American Family companies. You will work on insurance coverage opinions, attend and provide guidance at roundtables and collaborate on best practices claims topics. You will also retain outside counsel on coverage litigation and monitor declaratory judgment actions. The ideal candidate will assist in the continuous improvement and implementation of the legal department strategies and promote an organizational culture that encourages ethical conduct and a commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, as well as company policies and procedures. In this primarily field-based role, you will spend 80% of your time (4+ days per week) working in the field, directly interacting with customers, Agents, Agency Staff, etc. On occasion you may be asked to travel to an office location for in person engagement activities such as team meetings, trainings, and culture events. Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements - Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service - Demonstrated experience preparing civil pleadings, motions and discovery and deposing witnesses. - Demonstrated litigation experience. - Solid knowledge and understanding of rules of Professional Responsibility for the jurisdiction in which they practice. - Solid knowledge and understanding of tort, contract, and insurance law. - Admitted to the state bar in the state where they are located or (1) admission to the bar within one year of hire for individuals who must pass a bar exam or portions of a bar exam to be admitted or (2) bar admission as soon as practicable but no later than 60 days of hire for individuals with diploma privilege or who are eligible for in-house counsel registration. - Juris Doctor Licenses - Not Applicable.
