Who We Are At Murmuration, we believe that America’s promise is shaped and reshaped by the best ideas and ideals of its communities and the dreams of the people who believe in a better life for themselves, their families, and each other. We help organizations build power in their communities in four key ways: we organize a network of values-aligned partners; we provide deep, data-driven insights into people, places, and perspectives; we develop tools that make organizing and engagement easy and more effective; and we offer services that strengthen our partners’ capacity to build power and lead change in their communities. We envision an America where every community has what it needs to help people lead healthy, free, and dignified lives. We work to redesign the systems and structures we all depend on — how we learn, live, govern, and solve problems — so that they are just, equitable, resilient, and rooted in shared responsibility. By strengthening the ties that hold communities together, we aim for civic life defined by collective action and care, with effective leadership that truly represents everyone. We are a collaborative, curious, and creative team of organizers, scientists, teachers, technologists, campaign veterans, and more who share the unwavering belief that we can use our gifts in service of transforming America — together. We’ve built our team guided by the belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And so we support each other relentlessly — rallying together to face challenges the same way we celebrate each other’s wins. About the Position You're an experienced technologist who values independence and constantly looks for ways to improve how complex civic data is collected, maintained, and trusted. You apply strong technical judgment, care deeply about data quality and reliability, and take responsibility for delivering robust data systems. At Murmuration, you'll acquire and maintain high-quality public-sector data (elected officials, judicial districts, municipal offices, and more) that powers research, analytics, and programmatic decision-making across our network. This data forms the foundation for research, analytics, and programmatic decision-making that drives real change: it enables us to publish compelling insights, reach the right voters at the right time, and build organized, effective movements. Your role is to ensure this data is accurate, timely, and reliable. This is a new position, and you'll have a real opportunity to shape it. Emerging technologies (particularly AI-enabled tools and modern automation) create possibilities for scaling data collection in ways that weren't feasible before, but realizing that potential takes attention to detail and strong technical judgment. You'll be a thought partner in building the foundations of a new kind of system, not executing on an existing playbook. As a senior technical member of the Data Acquisition Team, you’ll independently own complex acquisition tasks end-to-end. You'll identify opportunities to improve quality and efficiency, contribute to decisions around tools, sources, and implementation approaches, and provide technical leadership through mentoring colleagues and leading work from requirements through delivery. You thrive in ambiguous problem spaces, are comfortable leading complex work end-to-end, and use Python, SQL, APIs, and automation to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions. You're a natural collaborator — you bring teammates into your thinking early, enjoy workshopping hard problems together, and make the people around you sharper. Job level: P4 What You'll Do - Build and design data acquisition workflows. Design, build, and maintain Python and LLM-based workflows for civic and public-sector datasets, including API integrations, data parsing, transformation, and validation. Use SQL to investigate, validate, reconcile, and analyze datasets across multiple sources. - Lead projects end-to-end. Own data acquisition work from requirements and source evaluation through implementation, monitoring, and ongoing improvement. Work with the team and cross-functional partners to design systems supporting new data types and evolving organizational needs. - Improve continuously. Identify and prioritize opportunities to enhance data quality, efficiency, and reliability through better processes or new approaches. This includes deeply understanding the data to help design better systems. - Get Creative. Create and leverage AI-enabled tools to accelerate development and automate repetitive tasks. Make informed judgement calls about where these tools help and where they don't. Not everything is automatable, when it’s not, you’ll roll-up your sleeves and do it yourself. - Elevate the team. Document data sources, processes, and assumptions to support long-term maintainability. Actively collaborate with teammates across planning, brainstorming, and technical implementation — whether that's pressure-testing an approach together, pairing on a tricky pipeline, or helping a colleague think through a problem from scratch.
