Job Description

Lead Software Engineer

StoneAge Tools

Role Description StoneAge automation only works if the software works. Reliability, diagnostics, controls logic, and user interface clarity determine whether our tools are trusted in the field or sidelined. This role exists to ensure the software inside our automated systems is predictable, maintainable, and ready for real-world deployment in demanding environments. Software at StoneAge is not an isolated layer. It is embedded within mechanical and electrical systems. It must integrate tightly, perform consistently, and support the StoneAge Assurance Promise in harsh industrial conditions. One Sentence Outcome: Lead a disciplined software engineering team that consistently delivers reliable, maintainable embedded and controls software that enables safe, scalable automation adoption. What You Will Be Responsible For - Leading day to day execution of the software engineering team across embedded, controls, and application layers. - Translating product and system requirements into clear technical plans, sprint commitments, and measurable outcomes. - Designing and enforcing software development standards including architecture patterns, code review discipline, testing strategy, and release readiness gates. - Ensuring robust diagnostics, fault handling, logging, and serviceability are built into every release. - Driving integration across mechanical, electrical, and firmware teams to ensure system level performance and stability. - Owning software quality metrics including defect rates, field issues, regression trends, and release stability. - Managing technical debt deliberately, making clear tradeoffs between speed and long-term maintainability. - Supporting field deployments and root cause analysis when issues arise, ensuring lessons are captured, and systems improve. - Developing software engineers through clear standards, direct feedback, and capability building. - Contributing to IP through invention disclosures and technical documentation in partnership with engineering leadership. Qualifications - A strong technical lead with deep experience in embedded systems, controls software, or industrial automation environments. - Comfortable working close to hardware. You understand timing constraints, safety considerations, and real-world system behavior. - Structured in your thinking. You break complex system problems into manageable components. - Disciplined engineering hygiene including version control, testing, documentation, and traceability. - Direct communicator who can push back when requirements create risk. - Calm under production pressure and able to lead root cause analysis without blame. - Focused on shipping reliable software, not chasing technical novelty. Requirements - Proven experience leading software engineers delivering embedded or industrial systems. - Strong orientation toward reliability, fault tolerance, and diagnostics. - Comfortable making tradeoffs that protect delivery commitments. - Does not tolerate sloppy standards or undefined ownership. - Owns outcomes, not just code. What Success Looks Like in the First 6 Months - Clear visibility into current software architecture, technical debt, and risk areas. - Established coding standards, review discipline, and release criteria. - Improved predictability of sprint commitments and delivery timelines. - Reduction in escaped defects and field software issues. - Stronger integration rhythm with mechanical and electrical engineering. - Defined hiring or skill development plan based on capability gaps. - Documented and prioritized technical debt with an explicit plan to address it. - Established ownership of diagnostics and logging strategies across products. This Role Is Not for You If - You prefer experimenting over finishing. - You avoid integration challenges with hardware teams. - You rely on heroic effort instead of disciplined process. - You resist accountability for missed commitments or quality failures. TEAM CULTURE - Customer-Focused: Passionate about delivering outstanding customer service. - Dedicated: Hardworking, trustworthy, and committed to giving 100% daily. “It’s not my job" doesn’t exist here. - Adaptable and Creative: Agile in the face of change, striving for excellence, and thinking creatively to solve problems. - Positive and Fun: Bring joy, humor, and a contagious positive attitude to the workplace. - Respectful and Collaborative: Listen to understand, respect others, and foster a spirit of teamwork.

Who we are Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale. Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term. About the role We’re looking for a Senior Image Quality Architecture engineer to join our team. In the day to day, you will act as the technical founding member. Responsible for the end-to-end imaging strategy, lab infrastructure, and primary ownership of lens/sensor selection, ensuring peak performance in both static and high-vibration environments. We have a tremendous amount of telemetry and access to customers that help guide our design process. You will work directly with our customers to ensure we lead the industry in our product design. We run a collaborative process working closely with Product Management, EE, PD, FW, EPM, NPI, and Hardware leadership to make excellent tradeoffs and choices. Throughout this process, you’ll share your expertise with other engineers. The US and Taiwan IQ teams are supported by the Supply Chain team, laboratories, JDM design resources, and a growing supply base. You will work closely with these internal and external partners to achieve our objectives. This role is based in our Taipei office, and it is a hybrid position required to office as needed. This position requires travel up to 25% of the time and proximity to an international airport. Relocation will not be provided In this role, you will: - Be an architect: Evaluate system feature tradeoffs and create the system IQ specifications for development with product management and cross-functional engineering teams. - Design and procure the IQ Lab (Charts, Light Booths, LED Flicker targets). - Define the optical requirements and lead the selection/qualification of lenses. - Develop the "Golden Tuning" targets for the ISP (Auto Exposure, HDR, Color Science) including Day and Night mode. Define and tune stabilization strategies (EIS) to mitigate "jello effect" and motion blur in dynamic scenarios. - Collaborate with Hardware Engineering (PD and Optical) to ensure CRA (Chief Ray Angle) matching between lens and sensor and preventing optical degradation during high-G events. - Manage: We bolster our internal development team with top JDM companies to design, validate, certify and manufacture quality products, certification labs and other external consultants. - Champion and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices. Minimum requirements for the role: - - 10+ years in Imaging/Optics; deep knowledge of CMOS sensors and ISP tuning (Sony, ON Semi, or Ambarella). - Vibration & Motion Expertise: Proven experience in managing image stabilization (EIS OR OIS) and characterizing optical performance in high-vibration/high-shock environments. - Must have shipped automotive or high-end imaging products from "bring-up" to mass production. - Proven record navigating tradeoffs between design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost. - BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field. - Ability to travel up to 25% when necessary. - Strong ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive independent work. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Total Rewards At Samsara, we build for the people who keep the global economy moving. We want owners, not passengers, which is why our rewards are designed to fuel high-impact builders. Our compensation program delivers above-market total compensation through a combination of base salary, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity (for eligible roles) in a high-growth public company. We meaningfully differentiate pay for our top performers, who have the opportunity to earn above-market compensation that can outpace the broader market over time. Beyond compensation, we provide the foundations that enable long-term success: a flexible, employee-led remote model, a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more. Optimize Auto-Exposure (AE) weighting and shutter-speed priorities to minimize motion blur and "jello effect" during vehicle vibration. - Stabilization & EIS Tuning: Actively tune Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and gyro-sensor integration to maintain video fluidity and frame-to-frame consistency under various road surface conditions. - Automation Development: Develop Python/MATLAB scripts to extract objective metrics (MTF, SNR, Dynamic Range) from massive field-drive datasets. - Tuning Toolchain Management: Build and maintain internal tools to visualize ISP parameter changes, ensuring that tuning "drops" are documented and version-controlled. Include visualization for stabilization performance and motion-vector consistency to ensure tuning "drops" are documented. - Regression Analysis (Dynamic & Static): Own the "Version-to-Version" IQ database. Ensure that fixing a DMS issue doesn't accidentally degrade stabilization or license plate clarity during high-speed driving. - Report Generation: Automate IQ report generation. Include "Vibration Robustness" scores in the summaries to provide the Lead Architect with a complete picture of performance in real-world driving. Minimum requirements for the role: - - 6+ years in Image Quality or ISP Tuning; comfortable with at least one major SoC tuning tool (e.g., Ambarella, Novatek, Sony, or Qualcomm). - Motion & Stability Expertise: Hands-on experience tuning AE for motion-blur mitigation or EIS for video stabilization. - Strong Programming: Proficiency in Python (OpenCV, NumPy) for image processing; specifically for temporal analysis and frame-to-frame metric extraction. - CRA & Hardware Awareness: Understanding of how lens/sensor interactions and mechanical tolerances (lens-tilt/vibration) affect the tuning limits. - Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
