The position requires strong problem-solving skills, effective communication with medical professionals to improve documentation accuracy and the ability to work independently, We offer flexible hours and the ability to work remotely. Pay starts at $19.00/hr with additional credit given for work experience relative to this role. Summary Serve as a resource for providers in understanding covered indications and the supporting documentation. Supports both technical and professional services in provider clinic as well as Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC) and in addition hospital professional services. Maintains a thorough understanding of National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and relative value units as appropriate for the role. Job Description Understands and supports the Medicare and Commercial Carrier workflows related to daily coding and denial review and appeals management, including the preparation of supporting documents and information to support the appeal process. Monitors and validates physician charge capture. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, multi-task, problem solve and make informed and accurate recommendations to medical professionals based on current information. Participates in coding team meetings and serves as a subject matter expert. Reviews medical documentation from physicians and other healthcare providers; assigns modifiers, diagnostic and procedure codes for symptoms, diseases, injuries, surgeries and treatments according to official classification systems and standards. Uses relevant policies, procedures, and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards. Provide accurate and timely international classification of disease – tenth edition – clinical modification (ICD-10) - CM coding of diagnoses, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding, and in accordance with official coding standards, regulatory coding compliance guidelines and company procedures. Review and audit medical record documentation accurately to reflect healthcare coding and to substantiate appropriate service reimbursement. Conveying coding guidelines to physicians and other healthcare providers to improve the accuracy of medical record documentation. Computer skills, the ability to interpret, analyze and abstract data/documentation, have good problem-solving skills, be self-motivated and have good time management and organizational skills. Qualifications Associate degree in Health Information Technology or Certification in Coding required. Specific knowledge of diagnostic and procedural terminology, successful coursework from an accredited institution in International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD) diagnosis, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding schemes, medical terminology or human anatomy/physiology is preferred. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P), CCS Healthcare (CCS-H), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) required. Role Description This position is responsible for coding, staging, and abstracting all cases of cancer and certain benign tumors initially seen, diagnosed, and/or treated within the organization. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients. - Abstracts and reviews cases of malignancies and certain benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated within the organization. - Codes, stages, and enters into the computer each case added to the tumor registry utilizing: - ICD -O - ICD -9/10 - AJCC TNM (Tumor, Nodes, Metastasis) - Collaborative Staging/Coding - FORDS (Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards) - SEER (Surveillance of Epidemiology and End Results) guidelines. - Complies with state and federal mandates that require the organization to report all diagnosed and/or treated malignancies and certain benign tumors. - Participates in the quality management of the registry data and activities. - Contacts patients, providers, and state registries per the database to gather follow-up information and verify or correct patient information. - Compiles data and generates reports for special studies. - Assists with the management of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory rules and regulations. Description The Inpatient Medical Coder under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality accurately codes hospital inpatient accounts for the purpose of appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics and compliance to federal and state regulations in accordance with established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems. Essential Job Duties: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. Analyzes inpatient cases, identifies and assigns ICD-10 diagnostic and PCS procedural codes for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal and state regulations. Utilizes critical thinking to analyze and evaluate documentation issues with consultation from the medical and clinical staff, and clinical documentation specialists as needed. 3. Monitors assigned work on a daily basis in order to facilitate the billing process within the established timeframes. Codes and abstracts records within timeframes established for each patient type. 4. Maintain a high level of accuracy in code assignment to prevent claim denials, billing errors, and potential legal issues. 5. Review medical records, including patient histories, examination findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans, to extract pertinent information for code assignment. 6. Communicates with various departments within the hospitals regarding billing and registration issues. Refers any problems to management timely, providing clear details. 7. Complies with AHIMA standards of ethical coding and coding compliance guidelines, including adherence to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) privacy regulations. 8. Utilizes coding references, software tools, and electronic health records (EHR) to facilitate accurate and efficient code assignment. 9. Participate in ongoing education, training, and certification programs to enhance coding proficiency and maintain credentials. 10.
