Under general supervision, provides interpreting/transliterating for deaf and hard of hearing students. Confers and plans with students, teachers and other interpreters in preparation for assignments. Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hard-of-hearing students (including faculty, staff and college guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and into the college community either by way of American Sign language (ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral or tactile system of communication. Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and transliteration services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) students, faculty, and staff in classrooms and a variety of academic and institutional settings (meetings, registration, advising, testing, tutoring, counseling, etc.). - Must have strong attention to detail, excellent listening skills, and a solid grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. - Accurately convey the meaning, intent, tone, and register of spoken and signed communication. - Exercise independent, real-time professional judgment to determine the most effective interpreting methods based on the assignment and the communication needs of the consumer. - Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, including standards related to confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate role boundaries. - Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and accessibility services to ensure effective communication access. - Adapt interpreting strategies to meet diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational needs. - Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, terminology, and subject matter when available. - Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and reliability for all scheduled assignments. - Perform related duties as assigned in support of intuitional accessibility and compliance obligations MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate degree in American Sign Language Studies from an accredited Interpreter Training Program (ITP) is required. In lieu of the required degree, a minimum of two (2) years of documented professional experience as a sign language interpreter in a postsecondary educational setting may be substituted. Substitution of experience for the degree will be accepted on a year-for-year basis.
