This is a remote full time position ideal for a journalist who thrives on breaking news, developing original features, and contributing to a fast-moving, high-output newsroom. Responsibilities: - Pitch, report, and write original stories about defense technology, emerging capabilities, tactics, strategy, and global conflicts. - Contribute to breaking news coverage and in-depth features that drive The War Zone’s fast-paced editorial output. - Work with The War Zone’s editorial team to refine story angles, strengthen reporting, and deliver engaging, authoritative content. - Research complex technical and military subjects with accuracy and depth. - Help maintain The War Zone’s reputation for analysis-driven, original journalism that connects technical detail with strategic context. - Stay on top of current developments in global conflict, defense technology, and national security trends. - Uphold The War Zone’s editorial standards of accuracy, fairness, and independence. Qualifications: - 2+ years of experience in defense, national security, technology, or related journalism. - Demonstrated ability to produce clear, engaging, and well-sourced reporting on complex topics. - Proven experience in breaking news and long-form features for digital media. - Strong understanding of military systems, operations, and technology. An expertise, beat or area of focus on one domain — air, sea, land, space — also fits requirements. - Exceptional writing, editing, and analytical skills. - Ability to meet deadlines, and thrive in a remote, fast-paced environment. - Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills. - Passion for defense journalism and curiosity about the evolving intersection of technology, policy, and warfare. This position with flexible remote work. Writers will collaborate closely with the editorial team and may contribute on both a recurring and project-based basis.
