Contractor - Mechanical Engineer 4 (NSSS Component Design)

NOTE: This is a 40 hour/week contract position anticipated to last through all of 2026 and potential into 2027. Work may be performed remotely within the contiguous United States, with travel as required for business needs. POSITION SUMMARY: The Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) design engineering organization generates technical requirements and associated design parameters for the modular advanced light water reactor (ALWR) NSSS. Utilizing proven state-of-the-art methodologies NSSS components are engineered to nuclear industry standards. The person in this position will perform a range of activities associated with the design, analysis, and manufacture of pressure vessels, related components, reactor vessel internals, and/or supports in accordance with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), Section III, and applicable regulatory requirements. All work within the NSSS Engineering design organization is completed under ASME NQA-1 quality assurance requirements and respective U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Prepare and review engineering specifications, reports, and other documentation that communicate the design and technical aspects of components, systems, and structures associated with the NSSS. - Maintain and revise computer-aided design (CAD) models using Siemens NX and related engineering drawings in accordance with ASME Y14 standards and best practices. - Utilize the results from BPVC Section III evaluations to optimize component design. - Collaborate with peers in different organizations and engage in the engineering change control process to ensure design decisions are well-communicated and well-understood. - Review design work of other groups (within and without the NuScale organization) to gain and maintain an understanding of how components, systems, and structures will work together. - Speak to the design of NSSS Components in discussions with manufacturing partners to ensure design intent is maintained while fabrication of components is considered. - Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES: - Education: A minimum of a B.S. degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, from a four year ABET accredited college or university is required. A professional engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred. - Experience: Minimum of 8 years of full-time relevant working experience is required. Candidates must be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience with engineering design, including personal accountability for design decisions. Thorough understanding of engineering drawings per ASME Y14 is strongly preferred. Design experience with commercial nuclear components or BPVC Section III is strongly preferred. ASME Design Specification Certifying Engineer experience is preferred. Familiarity with stress engineering analysis (design by analysis methodology) is preferred. - Industry Requirements: Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810. Role Description As a Senior Transmission Line Estimator, you will create utility project estimates, act as an extension of our client’s team, and provide best-in-class service. As the Senior, you will be involved with consulting on select projects as well as providing assistance to the Welty Project Management Team and mentoring junior Estimators. This position can be remote in the mainland United States, operating in ET hours. As a Senior Transmission Line Estimator, you may: - Produce Conceptual New Transmission and Distribution Line Routes on a Google Earth KMZ file with pole placements. - Create preliminary project schedules considering lead times, crews, construction durations, siting etc. - Write Scope of Work for conceptual/pre-funding approval projects. - Create and review transmission/distribution lines. - Work on projects involving 25kV-765kV Lines. - Review/Aide supplemental support estimates such as, but not limited to, access roads, forestry, SCADA/IT network, Fiber, Real Estate, and related. - Coordinate with other scoping and estimating team members, planning and protection engineering, sponsors, regional contacts and personnel from the supplemental support estimate staff. - Attend regional meetings with planning, protection and other stakeholders to review the status of all open estimates. - Review, approve, and/or reject estimate requests in OPPM. - Build accurate project schedule timelines for transmission line and support estimates. Qualifications - High school or GED required. - Bachelor’s degree in engineering or similar technical degree is advantageous. - 8+ years of either transmission line design or estimating experience within the electric utility industry is required. - Microsoft Office Suite proficiency, specifically within Excel.
