Role Description The Liability Litigation Specialist manages a dedicated caseload of litigated municipal liability claims and high exposure not yet litigated claims exclusively within the State of Illinois. This position supports a major municipal client and includes responsibility for complex claims, including: - Bodily injury - Civil rights litigation - Employment-related liability - Reinsurance-reportable matters This role requires strong litigation strategy, coverage interpretation, negotiation skills, and active oversight of assigned defense counsel. Attendance at mediations, hearings, and court proceedings is required. This is a specialized litigation role — not an entry-level adjusting position. - Investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and resolve litigated municipal liability claims in a fair, timely, and compliant manner. - Interpret coverage and draft comprehensive coverage position letters. - Evaluate damages and negotiate settlements with limited management intervention. - Consult with management on complex coverage issues and litigated matters. - Control, direct, authorize, and review activities of assigned defense counsel. - Maintain strong working knowledge of: - Illinois Local Governmental and Governmental Employees Tort Immunity Act - Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Applicable Illinois State and Federal law - Attend mediations, trials, hearings, and case evaluations as required. - Establish reserves and/or provide reserve recommendations within authority and timeframes. - Review court decisions, legal interpretations, and emerging case law relevant to municipal liability. - Review, approve, and oversee medical, legal, and miscellaneous invoices for reasonableness and relatedness. - Provide timely communication with municipal clients, defense counsel, reinsurance carriers, and stakeholders. - Report qualifying claims to excess and reinsurance partners. - Ensure full compliance with Corporate Claim Handling Standards and client-specific requirements. - Provide mentoring and guidance to less experienced adjusters on the team. Qualifications - Required: Minimum 15+ years of multi-line claim experience - Required: Minimum 10+ years of municipal litigation experience (Illinois preferred) - Strong knowledge of Illinois liability, municipal immunity, and civil rights statutes - Demonstrated ability to negotiate, evaluate damages, and manage complex litigation files - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including coverage letter drafting - Ability to manage a high-level litigated caseload with accuracy, urgency, and sound judgment - Must reside in the State of Illinois (required for court appearances and jurisdictional handling) - Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite - Preferred: Bachelor’s degree - Preferred: AIC designation - Preferred: Experience mentoring or training junior adjusters - Preferred: Experience supporting municipal or government entity clients - Preferred: Bilingual (Spanish) proficiency — highly valued for communicating with claimants, employers, or vendors, but not required.
