Senior Mechanical Engineering Consultant – Nuclear
Sargent & Lundy
• Manage project(s) consisting of engineers, designers, controls and scheduling professionals involved in the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing nuclear power plant modifications. • Coordinate with multiple internal and external departments to manage the life cycle of project execution. • Responsible for project execution, coordination of resources from each discipline as required. • Take ownership for all aspects of project performance including safety, schedule, budget, reporting and client experience through entire project lifecycle. • Manage and direct the project team to ensure accountability. • Mentor and coach team members. • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with client task engineers and stakeholders. • Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed safely, satisfactorily, on time, and within budget. • Support the reporting of key performance indicators for schedule, budget and other dashboard items. • Identify and control construction risk. • Recognize, identify, track and control change. • Communicate and consult with appropriate stakeholders and supervisors. • Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements and Sargent & Lundy formats. • Analyze issues and provide solutions to improve results.
Job Requirements
- BS from an ABET-accredited engineering program is preferred
- Proven experience managing multi-disciplinary teams
- 20+ years of experience in a technical field (engineering, construction, planning, etc.)
- 10+ years of experience with serving as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead role
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple competing priorities is critical to success
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative team setting

• Create bill of material and drawing packages for manufacture for complex and highly customized equipment, applying advanced understanding of IEM products and systems. • Performing design, troubleshooting, and commissioning job functions for assigned projects. • Serve as primary technical point of contact for the equipment design during the manufacturing and testing phases, resolving technical inquiries as needed. • Lead coordination with mechanical designers to develop optimized layouts, front views, and plan views for complex switchgear and switchboard designs. • Select and validate components, creating detailed bills of materials and verifying material compatibility and compliance with specifications. • Independently author sequence of operation documents and verify system functionality aligns with design intent, mentor junior engineers on sequence development. • Work with test and field service teams to verify system operation to the design and written sequence of operations. • Support factory witness tests, troubleshooting issues in real-time and communicating technical solutions to both internal and customer teams. • Provide advanced design support to IEM’s product offerings and customer requirements, identifying design risks and proposing solutions during project execution. • Serve as a technical resource for sales and project management, attending customer meetings, addressing design inquiries, and assisting in proposal development. • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers, sharing knowledge, reviewing designs, and providing technical guidance to promote team growth. • Complete short field assignments where troubleshooting, design consultation, customer meetings, or engineering support is required (generally less than 5 days at a time and not to exceed 15% of total time)
• Lead the end-to-end mechanical design and development of complex electro-mechanical systems, fixtures, custom test stations, and automation equipment. • Develop robust 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings using tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or Inventor. • Ensure all designs meet DFM/DFA standards and are optimized for production efficiency, cost, reliability, and serviceability. • Communicate complex technical aspects of a project effectively to customers and incorporate feedback into design specifications. • Perform tolerance analysis, FEA (thermal, static, and dynamic), and material selection based on structural, thermal, and environmental requirements. • Collaborate closely with Electrical, Software, Test, and Manufacturing teams to integrate systems holistically and resolve design interface issues early. • Support supplier engagement, part sourcing, and fabrication—domestically and internationally. • Maintain up-to-date design documentation including BOMs, technical drawings, and design change records. • Provide mentorship to junior mechanical engineers and support knowledge sharing across teams.
