Director, Software Engineering - Credit

Marqeta is looking for a Director, Software Engineering to lead and evolve our Credit platform. This is a critical leadership role responsible for scaling the next generation of innovative credit products that power modern fintech experiences. You will lead multiple engineering teams responsible for building, operating, and modernizing core components of our credit platform. This role requires a leader who sets a high bar, moves with urgency, and brings clarity in complex environments. You will partner closely with Product, Data, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to define strategy, drive execution, and deliver resilient, secure, and highly available systems at scale. We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely in the United States, only in one of our National locations, which you can review here. The Impact You’ll Have - Lead and develop multiple engineering teams responsible for core credit capabilities. - Drive platform resiliency, scalability, and operational excellence. - Partner with Product to shape roadmap, sequencing, and delivery strategy. - Establish clear engineering standards around quality, reliability, testing, and documentation. - Improve execution rigor including planning, sprint hygiene, and measurable outcomes. - Lead architectural discussions and make high quality technical decisions. - Stay close to the codebase and system design while empowering teams to execute. - Recruit and develop top engineering talent and actively build bench strength. - Create a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement. Who You Are - 10+ years of engineering experience with 5+ years leading engineering managers or multiple teams. - Experience building and scaling distributed systems in cloud native environments, preferably AWS. - Strong background in microservices architectures and high availability systems. - Proven ability to operate in regulated or compliance sensitive environments. - Experience in fintech strongly preferred; credit domain experience is a plus but not required. - Demonstrated track record of raising engineering standards and improving execution discipline. - Comfortable navigating ambiguity while driving clarity and momentum. - High personal standards and a bias toward action.
