The Semester of Service Program offers students a volunteer project-based opportunity to support Federal missions, gaining hands-on experience & valuable career-ready skills. Students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution, & participation must be with the permission of the institution at which the student is enrolled. This vacancy announcement will be open from May 15, 2026 to May 21, 2026 or when 25 applications have been received. The vacancy will close on whichever day the first of these conditions are met. If the application limit is reached on the same day the announcement opened, the open and close date will be the same. Candidates are encouraged to read the entire announcement before submitting their application packages. Project Description: IO/PCA seeks a student assistant for a special project designed to increase the IO/PCA team’s understanding of Congressional Member and Committee sentiment towards the United Nations and other international organizations. This project has two main components: - Tracking Congressional hearings - Data input and analysis to an IO/PCA-maintained Member Biography database The student would be asked to: - Track relevant Congressional Committee websites for hearings with IO Bureau equities (i.e. on UN reform, fiscal responsibility, policies towards specific international organizations) - Watch the hearing and provide a readout to the IO Bureau - Collate a backlog of one year of Congressional Member statements and data input into an established database - Research public statements from Members (i.e. press releases, public hearings, interviews, proposed legislation) on the United Nations and other international organizations - Analyze the statements and input to an IO/PCA-maintained database to create a comprehensive biography of Members’ stances towards IO Bureau equities - Periodically update Committee rosters and membership, particularly if the semester falls over an election period Qualifications - Applicants will be considered based on their knowledge, skills or abilities related to project needs - Prefer student be currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program - Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 scale - Students studying abroad are ineligible for application - All remote work must be completed domestically within the United States Requirements - To qualify, you must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution - You also must be in good academic standing as defined by your institution - Attach a copy of your transcripts to your application package for verification

The student volunteer will support the Office of Alumni Affairs by conducting research, data analysis, and program evaluation activities that enhance alumni engagement initiatives and strengthen connections between U.S. exchange program alumni and the Department of State. Specifically, they will assist the Office Director & Deputy in coordinating the Alumni Roadmap Initiative, which includes: - Conducting research on best practices in alumni engagement and community building strategies; - Analyzing alumni participation data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for enhanced engagement; - Evaluating the effectiveness of current alumni programs and provide recommendations for improvement. They will also support the U.S. Alumni Team on its Career Connections (CC) events, including the large July CCDC event at NFATC and planned CC events in Pittsburgh (Sept) and Phoenix (Dec): - Support program evaluation activities for the Career Connections D.C. event; - Assist with research on career development resources and networking best practices; - Help develop post-event surveys and analyze participant feedback; - Contribute to the creation of event materials and participant resources. Learning Outcomes: The student will gain practical experience in program evaluation, data analysis, event planning research, and international exchange program administration while contributing meaningfully to the Department's alumni engagement mission. Supervision: All work will be conducted under the direct supervision of Office of Alumni Affairs staff (primarily Office Director or Global Alumni Coordinator), with regular guidance and feedback provided throughout the project period. Project options include: - Mapping external actor engagement (China, Russia, Iran) across the region through publicly available diplomatic, economic, and cultural data; - Tracking U.S. congressional legislation related to Western Hemisphere issues and creating a searchable database with biweekly summary reports; - Compiling a comparative analysis of how WHA countries designate and legislate against transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) and foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs), identifying legislative frameworks and gaps; - Researching and mapping publicly reported cartel structures and transnational linkages in Latin America using open-source information. Each project involves research using publicly available sources, data compilation and visualization, preparation of summary briefs or reports, and creation of reference tools such as databases, annotated bibliographies, or visual maps. This 10-12 week project will provide the student with valuable exposure to Western Hemisphere security issues, strategic competition dynamics, legislative processes, and policy research skills under the guidance of a designated WHA/PPC officer. The final deliverables will support WHA's policy planning efforts by providing accessible reference tools and analytical summaries on key regional challenges. Qualifications - Demonstrate strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to gather, assess, and synthesize information from a variety of sources. - Excellent written communication and technical writing abilities. Requirements - To qualify, you must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution. - You must be in good academic standing as defined by your institution.
