Role Description Robust Open Online Safety Tools (ROOST) is looking for a Marketing Manager who can bring ROOST's tools and our mission to a variety of audiences, from individual developers to trust and safety leaders to mission-aligned funders. This is a creative and hands-on role for a mid-career marketer who can make complex technical topics understandable and compelling, and feels equally at home at an open source developer meetup as a policy conference. You'll own go-to-market strategy for new tool releases, drive awareness among developer and safety practitioner communities, and build the content and communications programs that keep ROOST visible and valuable to our users. You'll work closely with product, engineering, community management, and PR teammates. This is an opportune moment to join ROOST as a marketer: our tools are on a solid foundation and we've proven our theory of change; now it's time to ramp up how we tell our story and energize the open source safety movement. Key Responsibilities - Go-to-Market Strategy: - Own go–to-market strategy and execution for new open source tool releases, including positioning, messaging, audience segmentation, and channel strategy. - Collaborate with engineering, product, and community teammates to translate technical capabilities into clear, audience-appropriate value propositions. - Partner with PR and Communications to create complementary campaigns and messaging moments. - Conference & Event Presence: - Own ROOST's conference strategy, including selection, abstract submissions, logistics, and follow-up. - Support team members preparing talks, panels, and workshops; help develop presentation materials. - Coordinate ROOST's presence at major developer, open source, and safety events such as TrustCon, FOSDEM, and GDC. - Identify opportunities for ROOST to co-present or collaborate with partner organizations. - Work with the Head of Product and Community Manager to plan and execute digital and in-person events for the ROOST community, such as hackathons, community meetups, and tooling workshops. - Content Management and Product Storytelling: - Partner with PR & Communications to plan a content calendar that covers ROOST's varied audiences. - Manage content creation and calendar delivery, including coordinating with external contributors and authors. - Write and edit content for technical and non-technical audiences, from user case studies to position papers. - Produce and send a regular email newsletter to ROOST's community of users, safety practitioners, AI safety researchers, and supporters. - Manage ROOST's social media presence, content, and posting, with an emphasis on platforms where our audiences are active, with a focus on LinkedIn and Bluesky. - Create and deliver methods for getting trackable, year-over-year data that shows the power of open source safety tools, such as an annual user survey. - Own the roost.tools website, including updating copy and pages as needed as well as tracking analytics and offering insights. - Reporting and Performance: - Define success metrics for marketing activities and report on outcomes regularly. - Proactively identify areas for improvement, pitch new approaches, and work across the team to implement new approaches. - Community Participation: - Build relationships with the ROOST community, including developers, trust and safety practitioners, security researchers, and open source contributors. - Represent ROOST in technical conversations with authenticity. Qualifications - 3–8 years of experience in marketing, developer programs management, or developer relations. - Track record of developing go-to-market strategies and seeing them through to execution, not just planning. - Strong writing skills across formats (social posts, case studies, etc). - Demonstrated experience marketing to technical audiences — developers, security practitioners, researchers, or similar. - Demonstrated ability to learn new technical concepts and communicate them in ways that are understandable and accurate. - Ability to work independently and manage multiple workstreams with limited oversight. - Experience with standard marketing tools such as CRMs and CMSes. - Experience translating common marketing metrics into actionable insights. - Comfortable with ambiguity and able to build structure where it doesn't yet exist. Requirements - Familiarity with open source software culture and ecosystems; experience working with or around open source projects is strongly preferred. - Meaningful time spent in a domain such as trust and safety, cybersecurity, privacy, or a related technical field. - Familiarity with GitHub; comfortable opening Issues or Discussions, and submitting documentation or text change Pull Requests. - Experience in startups, non-profits and/or small team environments. Benefits - Premium health, dental, and vision coverage for employee and dependents. - 401(k) with matching. - PTO. - Remote-first work environment with flexible hours.
