Role Description The Vice President, States Initiatives will lead the Recoding America Fund's portfolio focused on ambitious reform of state governments, working with a growing field of partners. This role requires a field-building orientation to spur durable reform at scale. - Own both the strategy and operations of RAF's state-level work. - Bring a clear point of view on high-leverage reform opportunities. - Design scalable mechanisms for engaging state partners. - Focus on co-creation with ecosystem organizations. - Ensure the field is strong enough to outlast the organization. - Engage at both federal and state levels, ensuring a feedback loop with the Federal Policy Director. Qualifications - Substantial experience in government reform or public sector innovation (10-20 years). - Experience working in or closely with state government. - Strong understanding of the rhythms, constraints, and politics of state government. - Ability to create conditions for an ecosystem to deliver wins at scale. - Experience building and leading high-performing teams. - Comfortable representing work to funders and building the philanthropic case for state capacity investment. - Self-directed strategic leader with strong management skills. - AI-forward and actively experimenting with AI in work. - Thrives in a startup environment. Role Description The Recoding America Fund (RAF) is hiring a Head of Strategic Communications to build an engine of storytelling and case-making for state capacity reform. This role will shape how RAF communicates and develop shared language, story pipelines, and field-level narratives that serve the broader state capacity ecosystem. Key Responsibilities: - Narrative & Storytelling Programmatic Work: - Develop and execute a field-level narrative strategy that tells the stories of how weak government capacity affects Americans. - Build and maintain a pipeline of untold stories worth telling. - Experiment with approaches to reach broader audiences with state capacity stories. - Work with RAF's state and federal teams to develop compelling written products. - Prioritize elevating the stories and visibility of ecosystem partners. - Track and assess the impact of narrative efforts. - Ecosystem Engagement & Field Communications: - Develop powerful shared language and framing for the state capacity ecosystem. - Create messaging toolkits, talking points, and narrative frameworks. - Convene communications staff from ecosystem organizations for peer learning. - Design and execute convenings and gatherings for relationship building. - Help steward shared community infrastructure. - Organizational Communications & Media: - Develop and steward RAF's brand, voice, and core messaging. - Develop and execute RAF's media strategy. - Support advocacy and lobbying work with communications strategy. - Own RAF's website as a strategic asset. - Develop and maintain core communications collateral. - Manage relationships with external service providers. Qualifications - 6+ years of relevant experience in communications, narrative strategy, media relations, or related fields. - Experience in strengthening how other organizations communicate. - Ability to build relationships and community. - Experience in designing programs or launching initiatives. - Strong writing and storytelling skills. - Experience working with media and building journalist relationships. - Familiarity with AI for communications work. - Ability to work across ideological lines. Requirements - Elevate the field, not just the organization. - Invest in relationships over time. - Comfortable in the ambiguity of an early-stage organization. - Genuine craft in writing and narrative. - Curiosity engaging across political traditions. Benefits - Compensation: $140,000-180,000, depending on experience and other factors. - Competitive benefits.
