Role Description Joby Aviation is seeking an in-house Senior IP Litigation Counsel to join our dynamic and growing People and Legal teams. Operating at the intersection of law and technology, you will engage directly with engineers and management to navigate a vast array of legal matters globally. In this role, you will lead the strategy for intellectual property disputes. This is an opportunity to provide high-level legal guidance within a fast-paced environment dedicated to revolutionizing aerial mobility. Responsibilities - Lead IP Disputes: - Provide strategic counsel and drive business-positive outcomes for adversarial matters, including patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret litigation and pre-litigation disputes. - Direct Outside Counsel: - Manage all phases of the litigation lifecycle, including pre-suit investigations, discovery, motion practice, and trial, on a broad range of disputes to ensure outside execution remains aligned with company goals. - Support Broader Business: - Partner with the legal team and management to advise on complex agreements, commercial disputes, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory investigations, and enforcement actions. - Collaborate Cross-Functionally: - Work with technical and leadership teams to provide support for various legal matters impacting the product and functional areas. - Strategic Decision Making: - Exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations and take ownership of complex workstreams with limited oversight. Qualifications - A J.D. degree from an accredited institution. - 5+ years of experience specifically in IP litigation. - Strong written and oral advocacy skills with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-experts. - Demonstrated case management skills and the ability to identify the cause of unusual circumstances to devise solutions. - A strong sense of ownership and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-quality, and lean environment. - US Person Requirement: Pursuant to various local and state laws, and/or for US Export Control compliance, this role may require the candidate to be a "U.S. Person" (as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15). Requirements - Previous experience serving as a judicial clerk or direct trial experience. - Prior in-house legal experience within a technology or aerospace company. - Technical expertise or an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related field. - Experience partnering with cross-functional teams to provide expertise on complex legal matters. Benefits - Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $173,500-$238,500/yr. Overview Joby Aviation is seeking a highly skilled Flight Research Airworthiness Strategy & Standards Lead to guide our regulatory and experimental flight test frameworks. In this role, you will act as a primary strategist, shaping how we approach novel flight research and advanced operational testing. You will build coalitions across our engineering and flight test teams while representing Joby’s objectives within external standard-setting organizations. By developing practical, forward-thinking compliance strategies, you will play a key part in clearing the path for the future of autonomous and electric aviation. Responsibilities - Lead the development and execution of long-term airworthiness and regulatory strategies for complex flight research programs. - Partner extensively with cross-functional teams (including flight test, autonomy, and systems engineering) to align research objectives with regulatory frameworks and ensure seamless execution of experimental operations. - Represent Joby as a key contributor and advocate within industry standards bodies (e.g., ASTM, RTCA) and aviation rulemaking committees to influence future standards. - Create and maintain formal networks with key decision-makers at regulatory agencies (FAA, EASA) to advance testing of advanced aircraft capabilities, including Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) and autonomous operations. - Guide the preparation, review, and submission of experimental airworthiness approvals, Program Letters, and operational exemptions.Translate highly complex, ambiguous regulatory challenges into clear, actionable engineering and operational requirements. Required - Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aviation, or a related technical field. - 12+ years of relevant industry experience focused on airworthiness, certification strategy, or experimental flight research. - Proven track record of actively contributing to or leading initiatives within aviation standards organizations or rulemaking committees. - Deep expertise in experimental airworthiness procedures, flight testing regulations (e.g., FAA Order 8130.34), and navigating complex regulatory approvals. - Demonstrated ability to build consensus across multidisciplinary internal teams and effectively communicate strategic vision to executive leadership and regulatory authorities. - Pursuant to various local, state, and federal regulations, you must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) to be eligible for this position. Desired - Advanced degree in a relevant engineering, aviation, or regulatory discipline. - Extensive experience drafting and securing advanced operational exemptions (e.g., 49 U.S.C. §44807) or navigating the CMD process for novel aircraft architectures. - Prior experience acting in a leadership capacity within standards bodies (e.g., Committee Chair or Working Group Lead).\ - Experience with Military Flight Release (MFR) or Airworthiness Release (AWR) approvals. Overview The Supplier Industrialization Engineering (SIE) team is responsible for critical component development and qualification activities at our global suppliers. In this specialized role, you will be the primary technical authority for conformal coating, encapsulation, and environmental protection processes across our electronics supply chain. Your mission is to ensure that every PCBA and electronic assembly is shielded against moisture, salt fog, and thermal extremes, enabling the reliability required for FAA-certified commercial flight. Responsibilities - Process Industrialization: Lead the industrialization of conformal coating (spray, dip, selective) and potting processes at supplier sites. - Supplier Auditing: Conduct deep-dive technical audits of supplier coating lines, focusing on material viscosity control, curing profiles (UV/Thermal), and coating thickness uniformity. - DFM & Design for Coating: Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews to ensure PCBA layouts account for keep-out zones, masking requirements, and material flow to prevent capillary shunting or component stress. - Quality Control & Inspection: Establish robust inspection standards for coating integrity, including UV inspection, cross-sectional analysis, and adhesion testing (per IPC-CC-830 and IPC-A-610). - NPI Leadership: Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) for environmentally sensitive electronics, ensuring suppliers move seamlessly from prototype hand-application to high-volume automated selective coating. - Root Cause Analysis: Troubleshoot complex process deviations related to coating defects (e.g., delamination, bubbling, "orange peel," or dendrite growth) and validate sustainable corrective actions. - Material Selection: Provide technical input on coating chemistry (Silicones, Acrylics, Urethanes, Parylene) to improve aircraft reliability, manufacturability, and weight optimization. - Performance Metrics: Accountable for supplier yield and reliability metrics specifically related to environmental protection processes. Required - Education: Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. - Experience: 5+ years in electronics manufacturing or supplier quality engineering, with at least 2 years of direct experience in conformal coating and encapsulation technologies. - 50% Minimum (Domestic and International) - Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of IPC standards (IPC-CC-830, IPC-A-610, J-STD-001) as they relate to coating and cleanliness. - Equipment Fluency: Familiarity with automated selective coating platforms (e.g., Nordson ASYMTEK, PVA) and associated curing systems. - Travel Mobility: Ability and willingness to travel 50%+ of the time to engage with suppliers on-site. - Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate technical requirements and influence supplier leadership to adopt "best-in-class" aerospace standards. Desired - Experience in the aviation or automotive (EV) industry where environmental sealing is mission-critical. - Familiarity with FAA regulatory requirements and AS9100 quality systems. - Six Sigma Green/Black Belt with a focus on statistical process control (SPC) for chemical/coating applications. - Knowledge of plasma treatment or other surface activation techniques to improve coating adhesion. Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $70,304 - $171,300 per year. The compensation package offered will be determined by location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
