Position Purpose Reporting to Heartland’s Director of Business Intelligence and Data, the Data Visualization Engineer plays a crucial role on the team by transforming complex data sets into compelling visual narratives that facilitate better decision-making. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining interactive, high-performing, and complex dashboards, charts, and reports that render data both accessible and insightful. Utilizing a blend of analytical skills and creative flair, the Visualization Engineer ensures that data is represented in a clear, accurate, and engaging manner. Raw data is transformed into actionable insights using SQL, DAX, M Query, and data modeling to support strategic decision-making and ensure data governance. This is a full-time remote role. Essential Responsibilities - Architect, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Power BI semantic models, reports, and dashboards aligned with established UX standards and reusable components. - Design and implement complex DAX measures, calculation groups, and row/object-level security with a focus on scalability, maintainability, and performance. - Optimize data models and report performance using best practices in star schema design, aggregations, indexing strategies, partitioning, incremental refresh, and query tuning. - Collaborate with business stakeholders to clarify requirements and translate them into report designs, KPIs, and user stories. - Perform exploratory data analysis to identify data quality issues, trends, anomalies, and visualization opportunities. - Work with data engineers to translate semantic/model requirements into source data structures, data pipelines, and transformations. - Implement Git-based version control (branching, pull requests, code reviews) and CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and lifecycle management of Power BI artifacts. - Refactor and optimize existing reports for improved performance, usability, and maintainability. - Provide training to end users on Power BI tools. Requirements/Qualifications - 5+ years of experience in a visualization engineer role. - 4+ years of experience writing SQL queries, creating views, and developing stored procedures. - Deep expertise in Power BI data modeling, DAX (advanced calculations and optimization techniques), M Query, and Power Query. - Understanding of color theory, layout design, and best practices in data visualization usability. - Strong grasp of UX/UI design principles for data visualization, with a user-first approach. - Strong proficiency working with DirectQuery mode in Power BI, including the ability to optimize query performance, integrate large datasets from external sources in real time, and ensure accurate data modeling for dynamic reporting. - Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across teams. - Experience with performance diagnostics tools and optimization methodologies for BI solutions. - Ability to conduct thorough testing and validation of data visualizations. - Working knowledge of programming/scripting languages such as Python, R, or JavaScript for advanced analytics or customization. - Familiarity with ETL/ELT processes, data warehousing concepts, and distributed data systems. - Familiarity with veterinary healthcare or healthcare analytics is a plus. - Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical insights into business strategies.
