Payment Operations Manager
AstraAstra is a remote-first company hiring only within the U.S. We value thoughtful collaboration, clarity, and initiative. We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
About Astra Astra is building mission-critical infrastructure for moving money at scale. Our platform processes billions in annual transaction volume with 99.9%+ uptime, powering real-time transfers, bank debits, card disbursements, and complex financial compliance systems. We provide APIs and automation tools that enable businesses to move money programmatically while maintaining strict regulatory requirements. The Role Every dollar that moves through Astra touches payment operations. Settlement has to close. Disputes have to be answered. Edge cases have to be caught before a client does. Right now, Astra has built systems and automations to handle as much of these workflows as possible, but we are scaling fast and this role will define how efficiently we are able to do so. You will own the operational layer of Astra's payment processing engine: reconciliation across every rail we support, the monitoring infrastructure that catches breaks before they become incidents, and the dispute workflow from intake to outcome. You will report directly to the CEO and work side by side with Engineering, Compliance, and Banking Partnerships to make the entire system more reliable over time. This is a builder role. The processes, tooling, and standards you put in place will define how Astra operates at 10x current volume. If you want to manage an existing function, this is not the right fit. If you want to build one, it is. What You’ll Do Reconciliation and Settlement - Own end-to-end reconciliation across all Astra rails: Visa Direct, Mastercard Move, RTP, FedNow, ACH, and stablecoin - Build and maintain daily/intraday settlement processes that catch breaks early and resolve them fast - Partner with Engineering to automate reconciliation pipelines -- reducing manual toil, not just documenting it - Establish clear exception workflows: categorize, route, escalate, and close breaks within defined SLAs - Own the source-of-truth ledger that Finance, Product, and Banking partners can rely on Monitoring and Edge Case Remediation - Design and operate the monitoring layer for transaction health: success rates, latency, return codes, and anomalies by rail - Build alerting that surfaces edge cases -- stuck transactions, unexpected return codes, settlement gaps -- before clients feel them - Partner closely with Engineering to instrument observability, write runbooks, and build self-healing automation where it makes sense - Own post-mortems on operational failures: root cause, remediation, and preventing recurrence - Track and report on operational KPIs weekly: settlement break rates, dispute win rates, mean time to resolve Dispute and Chargeback Management - Own the full dispute lifecycle across card network and ACH rails: intake, evidence compilation, submission, and outcome tracking - Build and maintain a dispute calendar that ensures no response deadline is missed across Visa, Mastercard, and NACHA - Manage the evidence workflow in coordination with clients and the Customer Success team - Track dispute rates by client, rail, and transaction type -- and surface patterns that indicate upstream product or onboarding issues - Represent Astra with banking partners and card networks on dispute escalations Banking Partner and Rail Operations - Serve as the day-to-day operational contact for Astra's banking partners across settlement, funding, and exception handling - Own the operational relationship with card networks (Visa Direct, Mastercard Move) and RTP/FedNow operators - Coordinate with Compliance on NACHA rule adherence, return rate thresholds, and network reporting requirements - Surface partner-level issues -- degraded rails, delayed settlements, network outages -- and manage communications internally What We’re Looking For Required Experience - 5+ years in payment operations, fintech operations, or financial partner operations at a payments infrastructure company, bank, or processor - Deep fluency in multi-rail money movement: ACH, RTP/FedNow, card push (Visa Direct / Mastercard Move), and ideally stablecoin rails - Hands-on reconciliation experience -- not just process ownership, but the ability to get into data, write queries, and build the tooling - Proven dispute and chargeback management background, including working knowledge of Visa and Mastercard dispute rules and NACHA return code frameworks - Technically fluent: comfortable working with engineers, reading API logs, and shaping monitoring requirements -- you don't need to code, but you speak the language - Operator's mentality: you build processes, not decks. You close loops. You own outcomes - Experience in an early-to-mid-stage company where you have had to build from scratch, not just maintain what exists Education - Bachelor's degree in Business, Technology, or related field (or equivalent practical experience). Preferred Experience - Experience working at a payment facilitator, payment processor, or infrastructure-layer fintech (not just a merchant or SaaS company using a PSP) - Experience building or owning operational dashboards and alerting in tools like Datadog, Metabase, or similar - Prior exposure to sponsor bank relationships and the operational requirements that come with them - Familiarity with stablecoin or blockchain-based settlement flows What We Offer - Competitive compensation with equity in a growing fintech company. - Remote-first culture with flexible working arrangements - Small team, big impact — your work directly supports Astra’s ability to scale responsibly - Professional growth opportunities in compliance and risk management - Mission-driven — build infrastructure that powers financial innovation while meeting the highest regulatory standards Remote Work and Culture Astra is a remote-first company hiring only within the U.S. We value thoughtful collaboration, clarity, and initiative. We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
Product Lead, Platform
The Role We're looking for a Staff-level Product Lead to own Astra's platform layer – the APIs, developer experience, control plane, and foundational infrastructure products that sit above the rails and make Astra the Payments Cloud rather than just a payments gateway. This is an IC role with principal-level scope: you'll shape the architecture of how customers interact with Astra, how they configure and extend the platform, and how Astra scales to serve increasingly sophisticated builders. You'll work directly with the Leadership Team and partner deeply with engineering, solutions, and go-to-market. The right person thinks like a platform architect, writes like an API designer, and ships like someone who has felt the consequences of a bad developer experience at 2am. What You’ll Own - Astra's core API platform: authentication, versioning, pagination, rate limiting, error taxonomy, and the developer contracts that customers build on - The control plane product: configuration surfaces, rule engines, programmable routing logic, and the levers customers use to customize money movement behavior - Webhook and event architecture: delivery guarantees, retry logic, event schema design, and the observability customers need to build reliable integrations - Developer experience: documentation quality, SDK surface, sandbox fidelity, onboarding flows, and the time-to-first-transaction metric - Platform extensibility: how customers compose Astra's primitives – triggers, conditions, actions – to build complex payment workflows without custom engineering - Platform reliability and SLA products: how Astra communicates uptime, exposes status, and gives customers visibility into degradation - Long-term platform strategy: how Astra evolves from a multi-rail API into a programmable payments infrastructure layer, including agentic payment use cases What You’ll Do Day-to-Day - Define and maintain Astra's API contract philosophy – versioning strategy, backwards compatibility standards, deprecation policies, and schema design principles - Write detailed platform specs that engineering can ship from: precise, edge-case-aware, and grounded in how real customers build - Own the platform roadmap – balancing foundational investments (auth, observability, extensibility) against customer-facing features and reliability work - Conduct technical discovery with Astra's most sophisticated customers to identify platform gaps and extensibility needs - Partner with engineering to review API design, maintain developer ergonomics standards, and hold the bar on platform quality - Work with solutions and implementation teams to understand where customers get stuck, break, or build workarounds – and translate that into platform requirements - Drive the developer experience roadmap in partnership with docs, solutions engineering, and DevRel functions as they mature - Represent platform strategy in customer conversations, partnership discussions, and technical due diligence processes What We’re Looking For Required Experience - 6+ years of product management experience, with at least 3 years building developer-facing platform or API products at a technical infrastructure company - Deep expertise in API design – REST, webhooks, event-driven architecture – and strong opinions about what makes a platform great to build on - Experience owning a platform roadmap across authentication, configuration, extensibility, and observability layers - Strong understanding of how infrastructure companies create lock-in through developer experience, not just features - Comfort reasoning about systems-level tradeoffs: latency vs. consistency, configurability vs. complexity, generality vs. opinionation - Track record of operating as a principal-level IC – setting direction, influencing without authority, and driving outcomes across engineering and go-to-market - Exceptional written communication; you can produce a platform spec that is simultaneously a product document and a technical contract - Payments context is a plus, not a requirement – but intellectual curiosity about how money moves is required Preferred Experience - Experience building platform products at a BaaS, payments infrastructure, or developer tools company - Familiarity with the control plane / data plane architecture pattern as applied to developer platforms - Background in workflow or rules-engine product design – if-this-then-that style programmability at the infrastructure layer - Exposure to agentic AI use cases and how AI-native systems impose new requirements on payment infrastructure (context, controls, micropayment patterns) Why This Role Matters - You'll define the platform architecture of a company that has real ambitions to be category-defining infrastructure – the Snowflake of payments - You'll work directly with the founding team and the company's first Director of Product, with significant influence on product culture and engineering culture - Astra is profitable at Series B – the growth trajectory is funded, not a bet on future capital raises - The platform problems here are genuinely hard: multi-rail orchestration, programmable money movement, agentic payment primitives – this is not a CRUD application What We Offer - Competitive compensation with equity in a growing fintech company. We provide APIs and automation tools that enable businesses to move money programmatically while maintaining strict regulatory requirements. The Role We're looking for a Staff-level Product Lead to own the payments product surface at Astra – the rails, transaction flows, money movement mechanics, and the developer experience that sits on top of them. This is a deeply technical, highly cross-functional IC role. You won't manage a team, but you will operate like a principal: setting direction, driving alignment across engineering, compliance, and operations, and taking full ownership of outcomes on Astra's most revenue-critical product surface. You'll work directly with the Leadership Team and alongside a small but growing product team. The right person has lived inside the complexity of card networks, ACH, and real-time rails and knows what it feels like to ship payment products that have to work every time. What You’ll Own - End-to-end product ownership of Astra's payments rails – Visa Direct, Mastercard Move, RTP, FedNow, ACH, and stablecoin – from API contract through settlement and reconciliation - The transaction lifecycle: authorization, clearing, settlement, dispute/chargeback handling, and exception management - Developer-facing payments primitives: API design, payload schemas, error surfaces, and webhook contracts that serve sophisticated fintech builders - Multi-rail routing logic: how Astra selects, fallbacks, and optimizes across rails based on speed, cost, and risk parameters - Payments compliance surface: Reg E implications, network rule adherence (VCR framework, dispute windows), and AML/sanctions workflow integration - Rail-specific product strategy and roadmap: identifying capability gaps, emerging network features (e.g., RTP request for payment), and net-new monetization opportunities - Close partnership with payment operations and engineering on incident response, degraded-rail scenarios, and SLA commitments What You’ll Do Day-to-Day - Write rigorous PRDs and technical specs for complex payment flows, with explicit handling of edge cases, failure modes, and regulatory constraints - Own the product roadmap for your surface area – prioritizing ruthlessly across rail expansions, developer experience improvements, and compliance requirements - Conduct deep discovery with customers and prospects to surface unmet needs in how they move money - Partner with engineering to define API contracts, review implementation, and maintain a high bar on developer ergonomics - Collaborate with compliance and legal on network rule changes, NACHA updates, and card network bulletins – translating regulatory inputs into product requirements - Work with payment operations to define reconciliation requirements, exception-handling workflows, and ops tooling needs - Represent the payments product in customer conversations, sales cycles, and external thought leadership What We’re Looking For Required Experience - 6+ years of product management experience, with at least 3 years building payments products at infrastructure, fintech, or card network depth - Hands-on experience with at least two of: ACH, RTP/FedNow, Visa Direct/Mastercard Move, card issuing or acquiring, or stablecoin rails - Deep familiarity with the transaction lifecycle – authorization, clearing, settlement, disputes – and the operational mechanics underneath each step - Experience navigating Reg E, NACHA operating rules, or Visa/Mastercard network rules as inputs into product requirements - Strong API product instincts – you've shipped developer-facing payment APIs and have opinions about what makes them great - Comfort operating with ambiguity at the IC level – you don't need a manager to set your agenda - Exceptional written communication; you can reduce a complex payment flow to a clear, precise spec - Demonstrated ability to influence across engineering, compliance, and operations without direct authority Preferred Experience - Experience at a BaaS provider, card network, sponsor bank, or payments infrastructure company (vs. a fintech end-user) - Familiarity with stablecoin settlement rails (USDC, USDT) and how they interact with traditional fiat rails - Background in chargeback lifecycle mechanics, dispute reason codes, or VCR workflow design - Prior work on multi-rail routing or smart payment orchestration logic Why This Role Matters - You'll have end-to-end ownership of the most technically complex and commercially critical surface in the company - You'll work directly with leadership in a company that has product culture baked in from the start – this Director of Product hire is the first, and you'll help shape what great product management looks like at Astra - Astra is profitable at Series B – this is a growth story, not a survival story - Real-time, multi-rail payment infrastructure is one of the most interesting and underdeveloped product spaces in fintech What We Offer - Competitive compensation with equity in a growing fintech company.
