We are seeking our next Part-Time Interpreter who will be all-in on our mission and who will facilitate effective communication by interpreting spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL), ensuring the accurate and complete conveyance of meaning and intent. The position supports access to classroom instruction and related academic activities in accordance with professional interpreting standards. Qualifications EDUCATION: Required: - High School Diploma or GED. - One (1) year of college coursework and demonstrated ability to sign using traditional ASL sign language skills. Preferred:Associate's Degree. CERTIFICATES/LICENSES: Required:Certified interpreter or willing to obtain certification within thirty (30) days of hire. (ASL Sign Language.) EXPERIENCE: Required: Some experience working with hard of hearing/deaf individuals using ASL interpreting skills. Preferred: One (1) year of experience working in a school or college setting. Job Duties & Responsibilities - Use American Sign Language (ASL) to interpret spoken information. - Interpret a variety of courses as required to support individual student needs. - Provide voice interpretation for students who are deaf or hard of hearing when appropriate. - Maintain the pace of classroom instruction to ensure the student has full access to presented information. - Adhere to the Interpreter Code of Conduct and professional standards. - Attend and interpret classroom sessions alongside the student who is deaf or hard of hearing. - Interact professionally and respectfully with departmental personnel, students, vendors, community members, and management. - Participate in and complete assigned performance assessments and evaluations. - Perform other work-related duties as required. - As an Amarillo College employee, seek knowledge of and pledge to actively engage in a culture of caring striving to serve students, peers and the community by embracing the AC Core Values: Wow, Family, Fun, Innovation, and Yes! Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Proficient communication skills (Interpersonal, Verbal, and Written). - Active listening and critical thinking skills. - Excellent attention to detail. - Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). - Knowledge of accessibility requirements and accommodations for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in an educational environment. - Knowledge of FERPA and confidentiality requirements related to student information. - Skill in accurately interpreting spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English while preserving meaning, tone, and intent. - Skill in maintaining pace with classroom instruction to ensure timely access to information. - Ability to interpret for a wide range of academic courses as needed to support student access. - Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy for extended periods of interpreting. - Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, disability services staff, and students. - Ability to attend and interpret scheduled classes consistently and punctually. Salary: Amarillo College follows a lag pay strategy, with starting offers typically between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, rarely reaching the maximum to support long-term growth within each position. Pay grade 10 Amarillo College Pay Grades, (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons). Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or maneuver office supplies as needed. Work Conditions: This position operates in a professional office environment, routinely uses standard office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, copy and fax machines, filing cabinets) and is in a high traffic area with continual interruptions. Software commonly used includes Microsoft Office, Colleague, Business Objects, and various other educational applications.) Work may also be performed outside of the office and with little to no supervision.
