Commercial Lines New Business Underwriter

Distinguished Programs

• Handle new business accounts through outbound interaction with various carriers and brokers. • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with internal sales staff on new business submissions. • Underwrite habitational risks by identifying and analyzing risk exposures, loss frequency and severity against desired coverage. • Develop relationships with both external and internal customers, with the "customer experience" in mind, and deliver exceptional experiences with every interaction, in all modes of communication. • Provide and create solutions for a broad range of inquiries from brokers and team members. • Adhere to rating rules with proper file documentation. • Navigate our online broker portal to complete tasks and troubleshoot. • Identify opportunities to improve underwriting efficiencies. • Work independently within deadlines while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with stakeholders. • Obtain and understand market intel and trends. • Handle work with a focus on underwriting profitability.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of commercial property underwriting E&S experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of habitational P&C policies preferred.
  • Property and Casualty insurance license preferred (6 months preparation time permitted).
  • Eager for continual learning; professional designations are a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including negotiation skills.
  • Must be self-driven, detail-oriented, comfortable in a growing ever-changing organization, and have strong organizational skills including time-management and prioritization.
  • Some travel may be required from time to time for team and broker meetings.

Role Description Reporting to the Director of Underwriting, our underwriting professionals support our clients' outsourced underwriting needs in the analysis and evaluation of mortality and morbidity risks. The Underwriter is responsible for: - Examining the medical, financial, and non-medical risk factors of life, disability, and critical illness insurance applications. - Making quality decisions in accordance with underwriting principles and guidelines. - Completing assigned tasks within service time expectations and other established deadlines. This role is remote and must be located in Canada. Responsibilities - Mortality/Morbidity Risk Analysis - determine appropriate underwriting requirements and assign cases to the appropriate risk category by analyzing and interpreting underwriting evidence for mortality and morbidity risk assessment. - Provides technical expertise and support to client companies. - Demonstrates an ability to work productively in a high-pressure environment and effectively and proactively manage challenging situations. - Acts independently within specified authority. - Actively supports departmental management by providing input, assisting in training, leading team discussions, participating in projects, and being a positive contributor to the resolution of technical or client issues. - Contributes to a positive working environment with teamwork and a spirit of innovation. - Participates in RGA events and industry activities and fosters relationships with key clients. Qualifications - College diploma / University degree or equivalent working experience. - Minimum of 6 years of individual life underwriting experience including experience with substandard business, medical, and financial underwriting. - Service-oriented attitude with strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with our internal and external partners. - Strong communication skills, written and verbal. - Bilingual French/English (oral and written) is an asset. English is required as we need to communicate orally and in writing with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside of Quebec. - Multiple lines of business (Life, DI, CI) an asset. Compensation Range: $87,500.00 - $109,400.00 Annual. Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location.
