Role Description We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist III – QA-QC at UL Research Institutes. This is a remote-based opportunity. The Research Scientist III works with data, develops preliminary findings, and prepares written reports and data visualizations that support the research of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI). The Research Scientist III works closely with other FSRI leaders and researchers to analyze data and develop models associated with fire safety science to ensure all processes are accurate and technically sound. As the Research Scientist III, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you: - Identify fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s thought leadership and support the strategy of UL. - Apply intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks. - Exercise a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts. - Guide the analysis of unique problems and develop new and improved techniques and methods. - Analyze emergency response data to determine trends and develop solutions. - Experience developing automated test datasets and repeatable frameworks, data quality checks, and validation scripts. - Ensure data quality, lineage, and governance compliance using enterprise catalog tools. - Stay ahead of changing technologies by reading journals and scientific publications, and attending academic conferences. - Plan, design, and complete initial and follow-up tests as needed to validate results. - Work with students and teams. - Present research results internally or externally as needed. - Perform other duties as directed. Qualifications - Experience with ETL/ELT tools and modern data pipeline architectures. - Experience with data validation, cleansing, and quality assurance methodologies. - Experience testing and troubleshooting data pipelines, data integrations, and data transformation processes. - Experience developing automated data quality checks and validation scripts. - Excellent communication skills required. - Demonstrated experience with cloud-based data platforms and analytics environments (AWS, Snowflake, Dash). - Ability to collaborate with peers and work directly with Research Scientists and other team members in order to complete a project from start to finish. - Ability to serve as lead author on reports and papers. Requirements - Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field plus 8 or more years of directly related work experience. - Master’s degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field plus 4 or more years of directly related work experience. - PhD in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field or equivalent experience plus 2 or more years of directly related work experience.
