Senior Mortgage Underwriter
The Mortgage Talent NetworkThe Mortgage Industry's Premier Recruiting & Consulting Firm
Role Description Are you an FHA DE Underwriter who loves strategic file structuring but hates tedious, manual data entry? A fast-scaling, technology-driven independent mortgage lender rewriting the rules of modern lending is looking for a seasoned DE Underwriter who's ready to trade the grind of rote data tasks for the kind of high-judgment, complex underwriting work that actually challenges you. This is a fully remote role with real decisioning authority, AI-powered workflows that have your back, and a collaborative ops team that makes fast, accurate closings the norm — not the exception. What You'll Do - Master the Pipeline - Own a diverse pipeline of FHA and conventional conforming loans from submission to clear-to-close, with opportunities to underwrite VA, USDA, and bond/grant program files as volume and licensing allow. - Apply sound credit judgment on complex files — income, asset, and liability layering — while leveraging automated workflows that eliminate the low-value manual work that slows most underwriters down. - Be the Expert - Serve as the strategic underwriting resource for loan officers and processors on difficult-to-structure deals, helping the team find the path to approval within guideline parameters. - Maintain zero-defect quality standards across your pipeline while delivering the decisive, consistent turn times that set this lender apart in a competitive market. - Stay current on agency guideline changes (FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac) and proactively share relevant updates with your production partners. - Elevate Efficiency - Work fluently within Encompass LOS and utilize DU and LPA outputs to support accurate, well-documented credit decisions. - Collaborate closely with processors, LOs, and closing teams in a high-trust, fully virtual environment — contributing to a culture where strong communication replaces micromanagement. Qualifications - Active FHA DE certification with a valid CHUMS ID — this is a firm requirement, not a preferred credential. - 3–5 years of continuous, frontline retail residential mortgage underwriting experience. - Demonstrated mastery of both DU and LPA (Automated Underwriting Systems) and hands-on proficiency with Encompass LOS. - Deep working knowledge of FHA and conventional conforming guidelines; familiarity with VA, USDA, or bond/grant programs is a meaningful plus. - A self-directed, high-accountability work style — you're energized by autonomy, not paralyzed by it, and you hold yourself to a high standard without someone looking over your shoulder. - Strong interpersonal and written communication skills; the ability to explain a complex credit decision clearly to an LO is just as important as getting the decision right. - Must be authorized to work in the United States. Requirements - Active VA SAR or LAPP authority. - Experience with FHA 203k, USDA, or down payment assistance/bond programs. - Jumbo or non-QM underwriting exposure. - Prior experience at an independent mortgage company (IMC/IMB). Benefits - Comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). - Freedom to work from anywhere in the U.S. with a fully remote infrastructure built for it. - Stability, growth, and the kind of speed and decisioning latitude that only a scaling independent lender can offer. Ready to Make a Move? If this sounds like the underwriting role you've been waiting for, reach out to Deena at The Mortgage Talent Network today — she'd love to talk through whether this opportunity is the right fit for where you want to take your career. The Mortgage Talent Network is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected class.
