• Find, or build, the data that uncovers stories with an accountability lens. • Conduct analyses that detect bias, influence and other harms. • Report and write sharp investigative stories that seize attention and spur change. • Explain your work and make it reproducible by writing engaging methodologies. • Scrape websites and wrangle data, including the unstructured, messy kind. • Develop accountability stories by combining data analysis, interviews and on-the-ground reporting with excellent storytelling. • Assist other ProPublica reporters with data brainstorming, acquisition, cleaning and analysis. • Clean, bulletproof and spot-check data that underpins our investigations. • Teach and encourage best practices and newsroom data policies. • Work with some of the best reporters on the planet on some of the biggest and most innovative projects in investigative and data journalism.

• Stay up to date on the latest technology news, product launches, and updates • Coordinate with the editorial team for assignments and feedback • Input work into our in-house CMS according to editorial guidelines

• Produce accountability journalism that examines whether lawmakers deliver on their promises, how they spend campaign money and who influences their decisions • Write enterprise stories that go beyond daily coverage to explore political dynamics, power relationships, and policy impact on communities across California • Collaborate with reporters across beats (education, environment, immigration, health, criminal justice, technology) on stories that require multiple perspectives • Use our Digital Democracy database — a cutting-edge tool that provides AI-generated tip sheets and data insights — to find exclusive stories other outlets miss • Translate complex government processes and policy debates into clear, accessible stories for our diverse California audience • Report for multiple platforms including our website, newsletters, radio and television

• Authoring two twice-weekly Axios newsletters with potential to increase cadence that feature insights and scoops that matter most to the hyper-local audience • A command of the local market along with the sourcing necessary to illuminate busy readers about the community where they live • Helping build Axios Local and shape how the product evolves • Ability to create stories across multiple platforms, including newsletter, web and social media.
