Role Description We Are Looking for a Research Director, Gaming. Our Research & Data Analytics (R/DA) team is building the next generation of player intelligence for the gaming industry. Rather than treating research and analytics as separate disciplines, we’re integrating multiple sources of player data to create a more holistic understanding of gamers. At the center of this effort is PlayDX, our intelligence platform that brings together behavioral data, community sentiment, qualitative and quantitative research, and advanced analytics to uncover the motivations, tensions, and connections players form with games, shaping how they discover, engage with, and stay loyal to them. As a Sr. Data Scientist, you will help translate large-scale behavioral gaming data into predictive models, analytical frameworks, and scalable systems. Reporting to the SVP of Research & Data Analytics, you will work closely with research, analytics, and product teams to develop methodologies and tools that power PlayDX and other data products. On any given day you might… - Analyze large-scale behavioral gaming datasets to uncover patterns in player behavior, engagement, retention, and cross-game activity. - Develop statistical models and analytical frameworks to serve as the foundation for our data products and insights. - Translate complex behavioral data into clear, actionable recommendations that inform marketing, product, and community strategy for Open World’s campaigns team and our publisher and studio partners. - Communicate analytical findings through clear narratives, data visualizations, and presentations for both internal stakeholders and external clients. - Collaborate with research and product teams to integrate behavioral data with survey and community sentiment to generate a more complete view of gamer decision-making. - Contribute to the development and improvement of internal and client-facing analytical tools, workflows, and methodologies that support the continued growth of behavioral datasets and scalable insights. Qualifications - 3+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or advanced analytics roles. - Strong experience working with large behavioral datasets and complex data environments. - Advanced proficiency in Python or R (or similar tools) for statistical analysis and modeling. - Experience building models such as clustering, classification, regression, and predictive modeling; machine learning experience a plus, but curiosity and a willingness to learn are essential. - Strong quantitative and analytical problem-solving skills. - Experience translating complex analyses into clear narratives through data visualization, presentations, and written insights. - Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders. - Comfortable working cross-functionally and collaborating with research, product, and strategy teams. - Hands-on experience managing projects and coordinating with internal stakeholders or clients. - Experience with SQL or querying large-scale datasets is a plus. - Interest in gaming, entertainment, or digital ecosystems. Department: Data Science Reports to: Head of Data Science Location: Remote, but we will be strongly weighting applicants who are in or willing to move to Austin Applications will be open through early April with an anticipated start date of April 20, 2026. About Funga Funga is a public benefit corporation harnessing forest fungal networks to address the climate crisis. We combine modern DNA sequencing and machine learning technology with breakthrough research on the forest microbiome to put the right native, biodiverse communities of mycorrhizal fungi in the right place. This leads to more quality wood created more quickly, more carbon sequestered, and more resilient forests. We serve land partners seeking to implement regenerative forestry practices that improve productivity and sustainability, and corporate carbon buyers building high-quality carbon removal portfolios with strong social and biodiversity outcomes. We’re a team of passionate scientists and builders on a mission to draw down at least three gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2050. If you are excited by starting new things, learning as you go, and being hands-on in applying your work to the private sector, you will dig working with us. We encourage you to apply even if only some of the below criteria are met - just make sure to tell us why you’re excited about Funga! About the Role We are looking for a Data Scientist/Statistician to support our work analyzing forest productivity, and experimental data. You will collaborate with the team to scale our ability to process and interpret ecological and experimental data, contributing directly to Funga’s mission. We need a pragmatic builder who thrives on turning complex raw data into actionable models. This is a role for someone who balances deep scientific rigor with the urgency and velocity required to accelerate our impact. In This Role, You Will: - Perform robust statistical analyses of experimental and observational forest data. - Evaluate and enhance current experimental design by performing power analyses and applying statistical models to multi-year trials. - Rapidly prototype and deploy models connecting forest productivity to soil microbiomes and environmental factors, accounting for spatial and temporal dependencies. - Enhance our carbon accounting system to incorporate incoming field-collected, genomic, and remotely sensed data. - Build and validate pipelines for assessing the effectiveness of satellite and drone datasets for capturing on-the-ground measurements. - Work closely with internal stakeholders on Growth, Applied Science, and other teams to ensure that insights meet their needs and accelerate their work. - Travel up to 10-15% of the time for team offsite events, data collection, and stakeholder meetings as needed. Our Ideal Candidate Will Have: - An MS or Ph.D. in a quantitative field (Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent experience). - Demonstrated expertise in hierarchical/mixed-effects models, longitudinal data analysis, repeated measures methods, and spatio-temporal modeling. You know how to handle the autocorrelation and nesting inherent in experimental ecological data. - High proficiency in SQL, R, and Python for data manipulation and modeling. - Practical experience applying machine learning techniques to biological, environmental, or similarly complex systems. - Familiarity with data integration, version control (Git), and reproducible research workflows (e.g. Markdown, Jupyter, Quarto). - Pragmatism balanced with rigor. You prioritize rigorous, actionable insights over academic perfection. You know when a simple linear model is better than a deep learning model. - A passion for biodiversity, ecosystem health, and climate action. - Background in forest ecology, soil microbial ecology, or experimental design for field trials is a major plus. - Experience with geospatial and remote sensing data analysis is a plus. - NOTE - please apply if you feel you are qualified, but don’t necessarily meet all of the above criteria! Why Join Funga? - Make a meaningful impact: Contribute to innovative solutions addressing one of the most pressing global challenges - climate change. - Collaborative environment: Work closely with a diverse team of scientists, foresters, and business leaders who share a common passion for sustainability. - Career growth: Be part of a pioneering company with opportunities for professional development and leadership. - Participate in comprehensive healthcare benefits and employee equity programs. Salary and Benefits The expected salary range for this role is $90,000 - $130,000 USD, with actual salary based on qualifications and experience. Relocation may be considered for qualified applicants seeking to move to Austin. Funga offers a competitive benefits package including equity in our fast-growing startup; a flexible time off policy; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and a wellness reimbursement program. Our team is in a dynamic growth phase. By joining us at this stage, you can shape our benefits and culture, and participate in our business success!v
