Director, Institutional Sales & Education – Ophthalmology & Optometry Location: Remote in the US and Field-Based with Travel Reports to VP of Sales Company Thea Pharma Inc. is the newly established US commercial organization of French-based pharmaceutical company, Laboratoires Théa (Clermont-Ferrand). Position Summary The Director of Institutional Sales & Education will lead the strategic development and execution of sales and educational initiatives targeting ophthalmology residency programs, fellowship programs, as well as optometry schools and associated residency programs across the U.S. This senior leadership role blends high-level business development with impactful educational programming, ensuring the company’s eye care portfolio is positioned as a preferred choice among future ophthalmologists, optometrists, academic leaders, and key opinion leaders (KOLs). The ideal candidate has a proven record of success in institutional pharmaceutical or medical device sales, deep relationships in the academic medical and optometric communities, and the ability to translate scientific data into compelling clinical and economic value narratives. Key Responsibilities The areas of specific responsibility will include the following: Institutional Sales Leadership • Develop and execute a national institutional sales strategy for academic medical centers, ophthalmology residency programs, optometry schools, optometry residency programs, and fellowship sites. • Drive portfolio adoption within teaching hospitals, academic eye institutes, and optometry colleges by aligning strategies with overall brand objectives. • Build and sustain relationships with Program Directors, Chiefs of Service, Deans, faculty members, and procurement leaders in both ophthalmology and optometry. • Partner with commercial and medical teams to secure formulary access, pathway alignment, and product adoption in training environments. • Use data analytics to identify high-impact ophthalmology and optometry programs that influence future clinical practice trends. Education & Engagement • Oversee the design and delivery of residency, fellowship, and optometry educational programs in collaboration with the Medical Education team. • Partner with faculty to create hands-on wet labs, clinical workshops, and peer-to-peer training on the eye care portfolio. • Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards while maximizing product exposure and early clinical experience. • Build future prescriber loyalty by establishing product familiarity during ophthalmology and optometry training years. • Close cooperation with the commercial field team facilitating the hand-off of new MDs and ODs transitioning to private practice. Cross-Functional Collaboration • Work closely with marketing to adapt messaging for both academic medical and optometric settings. • Provide academic market insights from ophthalmology and optometry to inform R&D priorities and pipeline strategy. Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, MPH, PharmD, MD, OD) preferred. • Minimum 10+ years of pharmaceutical or medical device sales experience, with at least 5 years in institutional/academic sales or medical education leadership. • Ophthalmology, optometry, eye care, or surgical sales experience strongly preferred. • Demonstrated success in building KOL relationships and influencing decision-making in academic and optometric environments. • Deep understanding of residency/fellowship program structures in ophthalmology and optometry, and the academic adoption cycle. • Proven ability to design and implement educational programs that impact adoption and engagement. • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills. • Willingness to travel up to 50%. Medical Science Liaison/Sr. Medical Science Liaison (Northeast Region) Work Location: This is a field-based position that requires extensive travel. Applicants should be based within reasonable proximity to a major airport. The candidate must live in the territory or be willing to self-relocate within the territory. The territory includes the following states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. POSITION SUMMARY This position will assist with the execution of field medical strategy to support a portfolio of eight ophthalmic products, assist with launch Medical Affairs activities for glaucoma, provide support for dry eye disease OTC product, and aid in continued pipeline development. This position will also establish appropriate strategic partnership with centers of excellence, institutions, consultants and KOLs in areas of scientific interest. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The areas of specific responsibility will include the following: - Develop and maintain peer-to-peer collaborations and relationships with key medical experts in the ophthalmic community. - Maintain In-depth functional clinical knowledge of the entire Thea Pharma Inc portfolio. - Applies advanced field-based medical experience, subject matter knowledge, and skills in supporting medical strategies for Thea products and compounds and in addressing unsolicited requests for medical information from healthcare professionals, as well as managed care organizations, payers, and other formulary decision makers. - Participates in, leads, and contributes to projects and initiatives that increase the value and productivity of Medical Affairs (MA). - Collaborates with physicians on Medical Affairs (MA) initiatives including publications, advisory boards, and medical education. - Expands on and leverages relationships by aligning expertise with Thea needs. Successfully connects experts internally to serve as advisors, expert guest speakers, investigators, and business development partners. - Actively participates in executing Medical Affairs (MA) strategy at medical conferences by identifying relevant sessions, coordinating field coverage, gathering competitive intelligence, and proactively facilitating expert interactions with Thea stakeholders. - Actively participates in, and contributes to, Medical Affairs (MA) or cross-functional projects/initiatives. - Serves as scientific peer-to-peer resource to external disease experts and internal stakeholders. - Regularly collects and interprets medical insights and intelligence gathered from scientific exchange with key external stakeholders. - Communicates relevant information to internal stakeholders to define, update, and support medical strategies. - Communicate clinical insights on new data to Medical Affairs (MA) and to inform medical strategy for the therapeutic area. - Maintain accurate reporting and documentation of Medical Science Liaison activities. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS It is anticipated that the ideal candidate will possess: - A Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Optometry (OD), or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree is required. - A minimum of 2 to 4 years of medical science liaison or clinical/research relevant experience. - Communication skills, both oral and written, and able to engender trust and respect of peers, team members, and leadership. - Well-versed in highly technical and scientific languages to communicate with key Thought Leaders, Medical Affairs, Research and Development, as well as other key internal and external stakeholders. - Firm understanding of the key phases, processes, and techniques that are involved in both the pre-clinical and clinical aspects of drug development. - Proven track record of teamwork, decision-making and focus on meeting objectives. - Able to use field-based telephone and digital tools for all aspects of the job is critical. - Previous Medical Science Liaison experience in Ophthalmology/Optometry preferred. - Clinical, research, and/or teaching experience in Ophthalmology/Optometry preferred. - This role is open at the MSL or Sr. MSL level. The specific title and compensation will be aligned with the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and internal equity. TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS As a member of field medical affairs, it is expected that you: - Drive to or fly to meetings and client sites. - Overnight travel (50-70%), including some weekend commitments. - Travel may vary depending on geography. - Must have valid driver license with safe driving record. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT This position requires prolonged sitting. Additionally, requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity enough to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and vision to record, prepare, and communicate appropriately. Additional physical requirements include hearing spoken communication clearly.
