Core Responsibilities Medication Administration: Medication technicians prepare and administer prescribed medications, including oral, topical, and some injectable forms, following the five rights of medication administration: right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, and right time. They may also assist patients with self-administration when appropriate. Patient Monitoring: They monitor patients for adverse reactions, side effects, or changes in health status, and report any concerns to supervising nurses or physicians. Vital signs may be taken before or after medication administration as required by care plans. Documentation: Accurate record-keeping is essential. Medication technicians document all administered medications, dosages, timing, and any patient responses or side effects in official medical records. Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals: They work closely with nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare staff to verify medication orders, manage inventory, and ensure patient safety. Open communication is critical for effective patient care. Medication Management: Technicians maintain proper storage, organization, and inventory of medications, coordinating with pharmacies for refills and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Special attention is required for controlled substances and narcotics, following legal and facility regulations. Patient Education and Support: They provide guidance to patients and families about medications, including potential side effects and adherence to prescribed regimens, while offering emotional support and encouragement. Regulatory Compliance: Medication technicians must adhere to state and federal laws, facility policies, and safety protocols, ensuring all medication administration is legally compliant. Additional Duties - Assisting with general patient care if certified as a CNA or similar role. Participating in quality assurance initiatives to improve medication management practices. Reporting any medication errors or discrepancies promptly to supervisors. Medication technicians play a vital role in patient safety and healthcare efficiency, acting as a bridge between patients and the broader medical team while ensuring medications are administered accurately and responsibly.
