Role Description We are seeking a hands-on Lead Electrical Engineer to own the electrical design, integration, and commissioning of complex power systems for industrial energy projects. This role will be responsible for: - HV/MV/LV power architecture - Utility interconnection - Protection and coordination - Grounding - Control cabinet design - Field commissioning support The ideal candidate brings strong experience in: - Power distribution - Grid-connected systems - Utility coordination - NEC/FC1/UL/CE compliance - Arc-flash analysis - Practical execution from concept through commissioning - Experience with hydrogen, electrolysis, fuel cells, data centers, temporary microgrids, modular substations, or industrial power systems is highly desirable Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field - 10+ years of electrical engineering experience in industrial power systems, utility interconnection, power distribution, controls, or commissioning - Strong working knowledge of NEC, IEEE standards, UL 508A, grounding, bonding, electrical clearances, and electrical safety practices - Experience with MV/LV power distribution, transformers, switchgear, relays, protection coordination, and arc-flash studies - Experience developing electrical design packages, including SLDs, layouts, schematics, BOMs, and commissioning documentation - Ability to interface effectively with utilities, EPCs, vendors, customers, and internal engineering teams - Hands-on commissioning, troubleshooting, or field execution experience - Strong communication skills and ability to drive technical alignment across cross-functional teams Requirements - Lead electrical architecture for industrial power systems, including HV/MV/LV distribution, transformers, switchgear, auxiliary power, UPS systems, and grounding - Own utility interconnection requirements, including interface with utilities, EPCs, vendors, and internal engineering teams - Develop and review single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, grounding plans, panel layouts, electrical room layouts, BOMs, cable schedules, and electrical design packages - Perform or lead protection and coordination studies, relay settings, arc-flash analysis, and arc-energy-reduction strategies - Ensure designs comply with applicable NEC, IEEE, NESC, UL 508A, NFPA, and site-specific electrical standards - Support DC power system design, including rectifiers, DC distribution, insulation monitoring, grounding/earthing strategy, fault limitation, and overvoltage protection - Lead UL 508A control cabinet design, review, and manufacturing support - Translate high-level system requirements into buildable electrical packages suitable for procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning - Support RFQs, bid leveling, vendor selection, technical reviews, FAT, SAT, energization, LOTO planning, and startup procedures - Coordinate with mechanical, controls, process, software, and field service teams to ensure integrated system performance - Provide field support during installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer acceptance - Develop internal electrical standards, design guides, templates, and best practices to improve repeatability and reduce design cycle time - Mentor junior engineers and support technical development across the electrical engineering team Benefits - Competitive compensation package - Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision - Company-paid life/disability insurance - 401(k) plan - Employee stock purchase plan - Generous paid leave Company Description FuelCell Energy is a global leader in decarbonizing power and producing hydrogen through our proprietary fuel cell technology. We are currently seeking an experienced, motivated, and agile Staff Solutions Engineer to help us design, sell, and install advanced fuel cell-based microgrid solutions for data centers and other critical power applications. The microgrids will incorporate fuel cells, microgrid controls, energy storage, heat recovery solutions, carbon-recovery solutions and other distributed energy resources to meet the high reliability, high performance, clean energy needs of this demanding sector. Responsibilities - Lead solution development for client opportunities - This is a customer-facing role working hand-in-hand with FCE business development managers to develop winning commercial offerings that meet customers’ needs - Assess customer’s technical needs and wants through combination of online and in-person communication - Develop conceptual design of solutions incorporating FCE’s product and solution offerings - Work with third-party equipment and service providers as necessary to develop solutions - Support project economic modeling through energy analysis, system performance modeling and cost estimation - Support presentation of solution features and benefits directly to customer - Develop market-based solutions based on FCE’s product offering - The Solutions Engineering team is responsible for identifying emerging market requirements and developing value-added integrated solutions based on FCE’s core product offering. - Examples include microgrid feature development with third-party equipment integrators, energy storage integration to meet transient load requirements, and high-efficiency chilled water solutions. Advise and Support Product Development - The Solutions Engineering team participates in FCE’s new product development programs by representing the Voice-of-the-Customer, helping to define product requirements, and participating in conceptual designs of new products and features. Qualifications - BS in engineering (electrical or mechanical preferred) or similar field - Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience, with at least 5 years of experience in distributed generation, microgrids, or data center facility engineering - Energy project development skills, including energy analysis, site construction assessment, and financial proforma modeling - Experience in a customer-facing role for developing and representing customer-driven solutions - Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills to effectively communicate complex ideas and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences - Team player who works willingly with others and keeps a positive, goal-focused outlook when tackling challenging, time-sensitive commercial and technical problems - Flexible and adaptable to rapidly shift gears into multi-disciplinary roles based on the demands of the customer - Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite Working Environment/Working Conditions - This position can be 100% remote, but frequent trips to FCE headquarters in Danbury, CT will be required. Preference will be given to candidates in the Northeast U.S. - There will occasionally be visits to construction sites and customer sites throughout the U.S., and less frequently, internationally. - Travel: up to 20% domestic, infrequent international. - A passport is required to enable travel.
