The Role We’re hiring a Director of Business Affairs to own our business growth—monetization strategy, ad sales focus, sponsorship expansion, contract renegotiation, and new revenue development (e.g., paid membership/premium offerings). This person will also lead business planning and coordinate core business operations with corporate ownership, including evaluation of and leading expansion into new business lines, offerings, services, and verticals. Additionally, this role will serve as a writing and publishing back-up to the primary journalist to ensure continuity of our daily news cadence. What You’ll Do - Monetization & Sales: build packaged offerings, drive renewals, grow sponsorship/ad revenue, improve ad placement and reporting - Operations: business plan/targets, KPI tracking, coordinate invoicing/accounting/taxes/contracts with ownership - Growth & Product: evaluate tech to expand distribution; test premium membership or services; evaluate new offerings, platforms, or other forms of engagement to expand site visitor-ship and capture readership and customers - Editorial Backup (as needed): write/edit daily headline posts and send the email newsletter when the primary journalist is unavailable; maintain publishing SOP and backup templates
Role Description We’re looking for a business-minded operator to work directly with the Editor-in-Chief and help run a small publishing company. Think of this as a GM-style role for the business side. We want someone with strong agency who can spot opportunities, push things forward, tighten up operations, grow revenue, improve the product, and make sure the platform keeps getting better. This person should be comfortable jumping from partnerships to analytics to WordPress to editorial backup without needing a lot of hand-holding. - Help run the business day to day alongside the Editor-in-Chief - Grow sales through sponsorships, advertising, partnerships, and other revenue ideas - Improve how we present, price, and sell our offerings - Look for smart ways to grow the platform, audience, and product set - Explore premium offerings, new services, and adjacent business lines - Manage publishing operations in WordPress and improve workflows - Use AI tools well across research, content, reporting, and automation - Track numbers that matter and help turn them into action - Help with contracts, invoicing, and core business coordination - Fill in on writing, editing, and newsletter publishing when needed Qualifications - Strong writer and editor - Strong business sense and follow-through - Experience in media, publishing, newsletters, partnerships, ad sales, or operating a small business - Comfortable selling, negotiating, and managing partner relationships - Tech-savvy and good with WordPress, AI tools, and modern workflows - Self-directed, organized, and good at figuring things out - Cares about quality, speed, and getting things done Benefits - Health Insurance - Dental Insurance - Vision Insurance - 401k - Etc.
