Position Title: Chief Medical Officer, Lupus Therapeutics LLC Reports to: President & CEO, Lupus Research Alliance Location: Remote (US-Based), w/ occasional travel Salary: $300,000 - $350,000 (Starting salary may vary based on candidate qualifications, location, and other factors). Position Summary The Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) is the largest non-governmental, non-profit funder of lupus research worldwide. The organization aims to transform treatment by funding the most innovative lupus research, fostering diverse scientific talent, and driving discovery toward better diagnostics, improved treatments and ultimately a cure for lupus. LRA’s Board of Directors funds all administrative and fundraising costs, 100% of all donations goes to support lupus research programs. The organization was born from the merger of three organizations: the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) and the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation with the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), which was founded by Robert Wood “Woody” Johnson IV — a member of the Johnson & Johnson family and owner of the New York Jets. The Lupus Research Alliance is now the world’s leading catalyst driving innovative research that can transform the lives of all affected by the disease — patients, their loved ones and the entire lupus community. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), of LRA’s clinical affiliate, Lupus Therapeutics (LT) is responsible for providing drug development, clinical research, and clinical care leadership to the Lupus Research Alliance in collaboration with the Lupus Clinical Investigators Network (LuCIN). As a member of LRA’s executive team (ET), the CMO acts as a strategic thought leader as well as a partner to the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Scientific Officer and LT Board of Directors. The CMO establishes the strategic and tactical direction of LT’s clinical trial portfolio and patient engagement & education activities, ensuring that LT programs and initiatives are impactful, scalable, sustainable, and measurable. The CMO will represent the organization internally and externally as a clinical care and drug development expert in lupus. The CMO will demonstrate and uphold LRA’s values of science-focused, impact-driven, collaborative, equity-focused, patient-centered, innovative, and accountable. LT consists of twelve full-time employees. The LRA national office provides all other support. The LT team is fully remote with planned in-person meetings primarily on the east coast. Primary Roles & Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: • Provides leadership on all LT programmatic initiatives related to clinical research and clinical care of people living with lupus in alignment with the strategic vision and mission of the LRA. • Provides direct oversight and management of LT business operations and services to support clinical development programs and advisory activities leveraging the expertise of LuCIN to advance the development of novel lupus therapies. • Generates new business and collaboration opportunities and develops relationships with biopharmaceutical partners and academia to grow a robust business pipeline to advance organizational interests. • Remains current on lupus clinical care and clinical research advances and serves as an expert resource for staff, Board of Directors, external agencies, companies and individuals; and provides clinical perspective to inform patient education, communications, research funding, fundraising, advocacy and outreach efforts. • Serves as a thought leader on clinical research and patient care issues and represents the LRA/LT in national media, at national and international conferences and meetings. • Communicates outcomes, progress, and impact of LT’s clinical trial portfolio and patient engagement & education programs to a wide array of constituents. • Collaborates with the Advancement team in the development of funding proposals from the biopharmaceutical industry and other third-party sources for LT-centric programs. • Collaborates closely with the leads of Research, Clinical Operations, Patient Engagement & Education, Advancement and Lupus Ventures to ensure alignment of all LRA programs across the research continuum • Serves as a contributor on scientific abstracts, manuscripts, and/or posters relevant to LT and LuCIN. • Participates, as a member of the Executive Team, in partner development, organizational management, strategic planning, and Board of Directors meetings. Qualifications & Skills • An advanced medical degree (MD with or without PhD) with an expertise in Rheumatology and Immunology. Clinical care and drug development experience in lupus is preferred. • 12+ years of senior management experience, preferably in industry, academia and/or a disease-focused non-profit. • Extensive knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry and understanding of clinical care, drug development, clinical trials operations and regulatory components is essential. • Proven track record of forging strategic partnerships and working collaboratively with academia, biopharmaceutical industry, Food & Drug Administration and other external entities preferred. • Proven track record of leading an organization, including through moments of strategic planning; an ability to translate organizational mission into concrete operating strategy; of building internal structure to maximize organizational impact. • Ability to convey clinical, scientific and technical information to a diverse group of audiences. • Ability to master and communicate current and future disease and treatment information for the purpose of serving as an inward and outward facing resource. • Exceptional oral and written communications skills. • Experience in supervising and managing teams. • Demonstrated experience in a team-oriented, collaborative and cross-functional environment. • May work remotely, with the ability to travel to the NY headquarters with relative frequency and ease. • Candidates must have the right to live and work in the United States without employer-based sponsorship or work authorization. The Virtual Urgent Care physician will apply strong, independent evidence-based clinical reasoning and digital health best practices to deliver timely, safe, and effective care.
