Using established policies and procedures; the Certified Coder translates narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries, and medical procedures into numeric or alphanumeric codes needed for billing. The Certified Coder may code all types of inpatient, observation and outpatient cases (to include clinics, ancillary services, and ambulatory surgery, series, and emergency room cases) and may be called upon to code highly complex inpatient records (to include trauma, burns, open heart and transplant cases) based on experience and skill set.

How you’ll contribute The Coding Quality and Education Review Specialist will review accounts for accurate and appropriate coding and/or clinical documentation integrity (CDI) in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures. Participates in the identification of educational areas for the company through the review process. A Coding Quality and Education Review Specialist who excels in this role: - Perform assigned coding quality reviews for all coding professionals (e.g., Lifepoint employed coders and contract coders) in adherence to The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Standards of Ethical Coding, The Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist (ACDIS) Code of Ethics, Official Coding Guidelines, Lifepoint Health policies and procedures, The International Classification of Disease tenth revision (ICD-10) rules and regulations, and the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) guidelines and rules for reporting. - Identify trends and recommend appropriate education for the coding professionals based on the findings of the coding quality reviews. - Prepare audit summaries for reports for distribution to facility CFOs and compliance. - Monitor assigned coding quality review schedules and progress of reviews; propose modifications as necessary to improve audit effectiveness and efficiency of the schedule. - Serve as a coding resource for coding questions that are assigned. - Uses independent discretion/decision making while effectively working alone. - Attends educational webinars, conference calls, other coding seminars, and participates in all formal and informal coding discussions. Complete all assigned compliance courses within assigned period. - Maintain at least twenty (20) continuing education hours annually and maintain required credentials. - Conforms to AHIMA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Ethical Coding, LifePoint Attendance Policy and ensures patient/employee privacy and dignity by maintaining confidentiality with no infractions. - Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned. • Code physician charges by assigning ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS codes and modifiers from medical record documentation • Review and appropriately resolve pre-bill edits • Review and appropriately resolve coding denials • Meet or exceed productivity standards • Meet or exceed accuracy rate of 95.5% in monthly internal audits • Effectively present coding issues to internal team members, internal clients, or external clients • Deliver information in a one-on-one or small group format to peers • Meet deadlines and complete assignments before monthly closing dates • Locate and apply CCI, LCD, NCD and other applicable coding rules and client specific guidelines • Other duties as assigned
Responsibilities RESPONSIBLE FOR: Reviews, analyzes, and codes documentation for hospital inpatient medical records to select and sequence the appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnosis, ICD-9-CM procedure codes, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS as applicable to the transition to ICD-10. Primary coding responsibility is Inpatient Coding. Qualifications MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:High school diploma or equivalent required. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:One (1) year of coding experience required. MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:None. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:One or more certifications required - RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-A, CPC-H. Coding Certificate program (AHIMA accredited) preferred.
